Electricity Standing Charges

Options
This is possibly a bit tangential to most discussions on solar PVs but since i got my solar OVs plus battery at the beginning of March my electricity standing charge has been greater than the cost of my electricity. I'm with Bulb and my standing charge is 20.44p per day whilst my electricity costs 13.5p per kWh (24 hrs) and I have averaged less than 1 kWh per day. I have thought about switching to one of the few companies that offer a zero standing charge tariff but I am reluctant to do this until I have seen-out a full year and know what my winter consumption will be. I also have a feeling that you pay a higher standing charge to be on an Economy 7 tariff (as I was at my last house) which pus me off considering that option. Is this true?

My standing charge with E.On is 7.35p per day on my current deal. Previous E.On deal was about 14p per day and before that 15p.

I guess the answer is to do you price comparisons and look at the standing charges as much as you look at the totals...

With Bulb, the Standing Charge for Economy 7 is exactly the same.

E.On appear to be currently offering a tariff with 10p standing charge which I've opted for. No messing with E7 or more complicated tariffs but is estimated to bring my bill down my about £100 pa (the unit price is cheaper than my current deal too (which I only switched to three months' ago).
    Install 28th Nov 15, 3.3kW, (11x300LG), SolarEdge, SW. W Yorks.
    Install 2: Sept 19, 600W SSE
    Solax 6.3kWh battery

I cannot find an E.On tariff with a low standing charge. I see:
    Fix online v30 : 16.937 per day
    Fix 2 Year v4 : 20.223p per day
    E.On Energy Plan : 23.52p per day

E.On has 355 current tariffs in my area so i am unlikely to find the right one unless someone can give me a clue.

They change frequently. I am on Fix v 24, which is about £100 per year less than the v30, mainly because of the 7p v 16p standing charge.

No such thing in my area, unfortunately. There are:
    E.ON Energy Fixed 1 Year v24 : 26.009p per day
    Fix Online v24 : 16.937p per day

Indeed, and apols if i misled. I signed up for Fix Online v24 in July and it vanished fairly quickly. v25, 26 and 27 followed and then they jumped to v30 if memory serves...

My standing charge on E7 is 21.97p per day, which I guess is quite high, but having said that I then pay 4.7p per kWh overnight and 19.81p per day, making this a very good tarriff for me overall. Might be worth putting a few different options in Uswitch or similar to see what the various break even points are for the low tarriff. Hopefully zeupater sees this thread as I believe he's a big fan of zero standing charge tarriffs and may be able to offer some advice.
  • I can find only one single tariff that offers a zero standing charge (rather than a hidden standing charge where you pay more for the first x units). That is the Ebico Green Fixed v3 which charges:
    24.6666p per kWh

If I could average 1 kWh per day throughout the year then this would save me about 10p per day. Break-even against my current tariff would be at around 2 kWh per day.

  • I'm on Ebico GFv2 which is 21.82p. They increased the prices at the end of 2018 by 24.7%! It still works for me but it's now marginal and any change in my usage would render it uneconomic. They obviously don't want the business. With gas it's not such a difficult decision where it used to be the case that any other supplier I'd pay more in SC than my annual bill from Ebico.

Any further increases and I suspect they'll be saying goodbye to my business, but it's a faff getting out the calculator and spreadsheet and delving deep into websites to get the necessary information.
