My standing charge with E.On is 7.35p per day on my current deal. Previous E.On deal was about 14p per day and before that 15p.

I guess the answer is to do you price comparisons and look at the standing charges as much as you look at the totals...

That's very interesting. Just pretended to be a new customer here in Wilts and it shows unit rate 16.086p and standing charge 15.288p. Obviously costs more to maintain the grid and deliver leccy the nearer you get to the magnetic north pole:eek:

So much for opening up energy markets! Perhaps Malc from EOn could explain the policy behind this?

Hello pinnks and following on from my reply to Reed_Richards above.

You're right, we do have different Daily Standing Charges depending on the tariff and region in question. As above, this reflects variations in the cost and benefits of individual products. I'll try and put some more flesh on the bones.

Daily Standing Charges cover our fixed costs when supplying energy to individual homes. These costs include things like meter reading and maintenance, transporting energy to homes, maintaining the supply infrastructure (electricity cables, gas pipes etc) and generally keeping customers connected to the Grids. They also cover extras such as our environmental and social obligations like helping vulnerable households and reducing carbon emissions. The daily charge stays the same regardless of how much energy is used.

These fixed costs differ depending on variables like location, types of property, specific circumstances etc. For instance, paying by Direct Debit as I mentioned to Reed_Richards.

Networks are broken up into different regions and the cost of transporting energy varies from region to region. This contributes to the different prices seen between regions depending on whereabouts in the country customers are.

We have to pay other companies to use their pipes, wires, cables etc to transport energy. These costs vary depending on how much the local distributor charges for this service. Demand for energy in a given area is another factor as is the amount of energy generated in the actual area and how much comes from outside. The longer the distance energy has to be transported, the more it costs.

Generation costs also vary as do the different forms and mixes of generation in specific areas. Among other things, we use electricity generated by wind (onshore and offshore), solar, biomass and other forms of renewable energy. Again, the more energy generated within an area, the lower the costs are likely to be.

All these variables are factored into calculations when our pricing teams look at what level to set the Daily Standing Charge in any given area. We're also evening out costs as much as possible in an overall package made up of both the Standing Charge and unit rate.

Hope this gives a bit of an insight into our Daily Standing Charges pinnks. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

• Hello Reed_Richards and not sure where you're looking. We've never had 355 current tariffs on the go at the same time in any area.

I went to this page: https://www.eonenergy.com/for-your-home/help-and-support/search-tariff-information and submitted the details of my address. This now shows 358 tariffs for electricity only.
It's best to check our website and the independent Price Comparison sites to see what we've available at any given time.

The trouble with these sites is that they think they know best and do not allow a direct comparison. You tell them how much electricity you think you will use in a year. They tell you which tariff they think is best. You click on one link for details but the Tariff Information Label is usually hidden until you click on another link. If you want to find a tariff with a low standing charge it makes the whole process very slow and cumbersome.
Daily Standing Charges and unit rates vary depending on the tariff.
And the rates for what is nominally the same tariff can vary widely from one area to another as you admit in your next comment.

E.On appear to be currently offering a tariff with 10p standing charge which I've opted for. No messing with E7 or more complicated tariffs but is estimated to bring my bill down my about £100 pa (the unit price is cheaper than my current deal too (which I only switched to three months' ago).
The tariff I've just got is still showing as available (at least in my area) on the MSE comparison site. It's E.ON Fix Online Exclusive v7

Hello Exiled Tyke and thanks for joining us.

Our Fix Online Exclusive v7 tariff has been withdrawn from sale since you posted and replaced by version 8. This won't affect you if you've already signed up for version 7.

I can confirm, in some areas, version 7 has a 10.50p (including VAT) Daily Standing Charge for customers paying by Direct Debit.

Also in some areas (not necessarily the same areas), version 8 has a 10.49p (including VAT) Daily Standing Charge for payment by Direct Debit. With both versions 7 and 8, other areas have significantly higher Standing Charges.

Both version 7 and 8 were/are available to new customers only. As such, they're not on our website switching tool and can only be seen on Price Comparison sites.

Thanks again for switching to us Exiled Tyke.

Hello Reed_Richards and thanks for coming back to me.

The link you've posted goes to the Tariff Information Labels for all the tariffs we've previously sold in a selected region. The overwhelming majority of these are no longer available for sale.

To see the tariffs currently on sale, please go to our website and choose 'gas and electricity' at the top of the landing page. Then choose 'gas and electricity tariffs' from the next menu. This opens up a page listing the tariffs we currently have available for both new and existing customers.

To see tariffs exclusively for new customers please pop your details into a Price Comparison site. These tariffs aren't available through our website.

Totally agree, to see the individual Standing Charges and unit rates you need to open up the Tariff Information Label for each product.

Also agree, Standing Charges and unit rates vary depending on the product and region. Please see my post earlier today (#32) where I've given more details about this in my reply to pinnks.

Let me know if you need any more information Reed_Richards as happy to help.
