depositing into a bookie

I keep getting charged for depositing into a bookmaker - how can I avoid such charges.

They see it as card and charge the same if I bought lottery tickets or currency.

  • It's a cash advance, so if you deposit into a bookmaker, or casino, using a Credit Card you will get charged as such.

Deposit by Debit Card if you must gamble. If you're gambling by Credit Card it could be a major red flag for a gambling addiction.

What's your reasoning behind using a Credit Card rather than a Debit Card?

Is your bookie charging you or is the card charging you

Tesco credit card is charging me - I deposit £1000 and they charge £20
  • It’s a cash transaction.
Therefore it’s chargeable and subject to interest.

What is a Cash Transaction fee?

When you use your credit card to make a ‘cash-like’ transaction, you’ll be charged a Cash Transaction fee. Cash transactions include:
    • Gambling transactions - these include using your card to buy lottery tickets, online gambling sites such as bet365 and Gala Bingo as well as traditional bookmakers like William Hill

Thanks yes I understand just trying to find a way to deposit when I don't have funds in my current account
  • Hi,

wow, you stick £1000 into a bookies and you query a £20 charge?

As will all credit card providers.

Topping up a casino/bookmaker account is a cash advance and will result in a cash advance charge.

£1,000 is a lot to top-up in one go. Can you afford to lose that? This could potentially lead to posts such as "I've got £10k of debt on my credit card, but I can't pay it off, help!".

Perhaps, you should total up how much you're gambling before proceeding and stop and think about it?

If you have money in other accounts (savings, etc) then use those.

If you don't have money to deposit but still feel the need to do so anyway then you'll have to borrow it, either from a credit card provider or other credit facilities, but any of these will charge you for the privilege of spending their money in a high-risk manner....

Don't gamble more than you afford?

If you don't have £1k, don't waste it at the bookmakers?

You're borrowing money for a cash advance, they will charge you for the privilege!
