My son also bites himself, hits himself, bangs his head on the wall, and chews clothes, toys, fingers etc incessantly. It's heartbreaking to see him hurting himself. I've never been sure whether it's an ASD thing or not - does anyone else have experience of this?

Ryan was telling me a long story about Doctor Who yesterday, and suddenly stopped and said 'Am I going too far?'. I believe this is also a Doctor Who quote, but if it helps him realise when he has been talking for too long, then it's a good thing, I think.

I'm quite glad Christmas is over really. We have all enjoyed it but routines have gone out of the window despite our best efforts, and I can tell Ryan is really unsettled.

snaggles, your not the only one who is glad xmas is over, cant wait for the routine that is school if i'm honest just need an hour to myself lol.
blue monkey, my sons are almost teenagers they will be 13 in april, and the self harming and the trying to commit suicide was getting unbearable, was scared to leave the house cos daniel used to lay in the road or run in front of cars, wanting them to kill him, he was so unhappy, and being a big strong lad, and me having his twin to cope with too found it all too much at times.
they have calmed down a lot now they are both on medication prescribed by the pyschiatrist.
enjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)
  • Hi blue monkey your doc sounds great and even without an official diagnosis I would think a letter from him should carry quite a bit of weight.I'm so glad you are getting your head around asking for help- I know where you are coming from with being independant but it does get easier and you will get more confident as time goes on. Dont think too much about the future remember Holland and enjoy the scenery while you are there . I have found some things get easier and some things change and the best thing to do is try and enjoy the journey as best we can. I'm so glad we can be of help, we are all in the same boat so it makes sense to pool our info.Dont feel bad about offloading ,we all need to do this ( see my rant a few pages back!) Your CP should be able to put you in touch with a local support group, failing that try the National Autistic Society. Also re the blanket DS1 loved the ribbon on the edgeof his cot blankets so I sewed some into his trouser pockets not so easy if its the whole blanket he loves. If the school wont let him have the blanket on the days he needs it I would let them take it off him after you have gone and let them get on with it -(You can be very sweet about this he he) they may realise why you allow him to have it , sometimes they have to find out for themselves!
Shazrobo glad your situation has improved I dont envy you with twins

blue monkey, just remembered my sons were not allowed to take a cuddly toy in class, but they could keep one in the staffroom, so if they were getting upset, and needed to take time out to calm down, they could go cuddle their toy.

  • Hi guys,

Not sure if anyone will read this in time but I have the doctor calling me about the letter. The doctor from the council does not visit the council offices until the 16th Jan so we need to have a letter from them by then. I am going to speak to the doctor and ask him if I can have a letter regarding Mya's respite, as Ryan will go and wake her by hurting her (hair pulling, hitting, etc...), he often wakes screaming and also that we need the security as we are being expected to go into a private rented place and there is the possibility it could mean moving every 6 months if we can only get a short term lease and he already hates changes around the house. Because there is not a lot available in these areas (so far only 4 bed places) this will mean having to move schools/doctors/areas every 6 months as well. I never thought on this before, what a nightmare. Do you think this will be enough for him to send the letter without him having seen the paed yet? Fingers crossed he will have been to see the paed and that we might have a diagnosis before then. We can only hope.

Will mail more later on tonight/tomorrow - have a stack of ironing the size of a small horse that has been left until 'tomorrow' for a week now, LOL!!
  • Good luck, I'm sure the Doc will write the letter!

Regarding changing schools - when we moved we ended up 4 miles from DS's school. The LA was concerned that changing schools could really set him back (and possibly cost them more money in support!) so they paid for a taxi to take him to and from school!

As for short tenancy that was what I got my house for as we had already been evicted from another short term lease (through no fault of our own). The consultand at CAMHs was very supportive of this!
  • Thanks KC, I will come bac and let you know what the doc says. I think we can safely assume we will not be moving for another month at least. They have not given us anything extra and we only have 73 points, ytou are supposed to get 25 points once you have been issued your section 21 notice but they have not given us this. We have nothing yet for Ryan and nothing for low income so we are supposed to have enough money to rent - we can't rent due to bad debts and we have told them this. My hubby got Industrial Asthma and he is waiting for a payout which we hope will clear these (but we can;t assume he will get enough to do all of them!) and he is losing about 14k pa on wages now as he can't work in the same industry. I read on another board that the LA and EA are charging £150 to £200 per credit check knowing you won't get through by saying it won't make a difference if it comes back poor and that there will be someone prepared to take you on. But no-one will as they can't get Landlord Insurances for their tenant unless the credit check comes back A1!! I get more and more shocked at the lengths people go to these days. So, we shall see what happens I guess.

I did tell the council woman that I was sorry for sounding so needy over wanting a 3 bedroom place and she told me not to be as I need to secure what is best for my family and without a note from the doctor we can only be considered for 2 bedrooms both in the private and LA sector. Anyone can call up and say they need this that and the other, and I guess they are right.

So I will keep you posted. just waiting for him to call now. x

  • Hi BM

What is Section 21 notice? I think I may have missed something. This is a great thread but difficult to keep up with at times!!

I know people who have got in touch with Shelter over housing problems and have found them very helpful!

Just got the phone call. I explained about him needing his own room, etc... but he is going to write a letter explaining that he is undergoing investingation of ADHD! Not sure if this is going to be enough, so I guess it is beter than nothing and there is always a chance we could see the paed before we get an eviction date and get a diagnosis.

You know the frustrating thing is that the doctor didn't see all the notes I took in so all he asked was does he sleep, how does he play and will he sit and watch TV and I answered but although he has the paperwork from the school he never looked at that.

Never mind, I guess at least if we do get a 2 bed it will only be temporary until we get a diagnosis. I guess I'll just have to not unpack for a bit!! I don't even know what hospital he has reffered him to so I can't ring and harrass them for an appointment!! At least I have the letter so they cannot say I am lying about him needing to be referred. Do you think that other doctors would realise that kids with ADHD are aggressive too??

Anyone know where I can find the differences between the two conditions??
