(((hugs))) blue monkey, at the end of the day its your choice over whether he is medicated or not, and also be aware there is more than one drug available for adhd, and some work differently and have different effects on different kids.
for instance a lot of parents swear by ritalin, but in fact it actually made my sons behaviour so much worse, and i stopped it. then i managed both lads with no medication at all til they where around ten years old.
don't feel guilty hun, its not your fault that your son has this condition, you are a fab mum, doing all you can for him.
and it is a shock to finally have the diagnosis, even if you suspected it all along.
take care

Hi all,
I haven't been on here for a few months but I've just been quickly catching up with what I've missed. Sounds like you all need high rate DLA to restock those bathroom supplies... Personally, if I can get any it'll be all for respite.
Anyway, the behavioural centre say that he's likely to be there for quite some months while they assess him for the Statementing and determine whether he's going back to mainstream or find him an appropriate special school. His tour of the school he was due to start at in September has been put on hold since we don't know if he'll still be going there. He used to do after school football (when he was in the mood) so that's also down the gurgler.
He's clearly been upset and anxious about everything this weekend. I think he's understanding now how serious the situation has got but we're not all that convinced he's going to be able to improve. The only glimmer of hope is that he treats his Dad better than he treats me or his teachers, which suggests he has less respect for females. Certainly thinks he's a grown up and has little respect for authority in general.
They say that it will all be resolved within a year and he will be in appropriate education, but I think it's going to be a LONG year...
Meanwhile his younger brother is currently under the paediatrician, speech therapy, portage, occupational therapy and educational psychologist, all trying to catch his development up for school in September. He really, really looks forward to going. I'm trying to get him out of nappies still but we've having reasonable success (at the nursery end anyway). Just don't like the way he's picking up some behaviours from his brother, especially having IDIOT and SHUT UP bellowed at me all the time...
Sorry I've been waffling on but felt like I needed to vent a little to those that understand...
Oh, two more questions:
1 Paediatrician recommended Transporters DVD. Are any still available free from anywhere or do you just have to keep an eye on Ebay?
2 Do you really have to have a diagnosis before you can go on NAS parent courses or can you get on with proof you're on the assessment queue or something?

Big hugs to you mousy. At least the wheels are in motion. I loved reading your post as the shut up , hitting and eating chocolate as a comfort (i have put on loads of weight because of it! are all things that i can relate to.My one too is also young. I am hoping that time will help ease the behaviour a little. Also i am looking into Jan De Vries natural approach to autism/aspergers. I know a friends son that is autistic is a different child after taking evening primrose, avoiding gluten and other stuff so there is always hope.
Sorry you have had a bad time blue monkey. Kids are awful. My oldest found his good friends at middle school and has kept them . He is a lovely easy going kid and pretty normal although i can see aspergers traits and the funny thing is that i have noticed that he really has made a lot of new friends at high school that are truly aspergers kids so i am sure yours will find good friends in the end. It is heart breaking and kids always say or do horrible things. I remember(shamefullly) being in a group of girls who got this disabled boy to do naughty things and we laughed at him but i did really care about him (this was at primary school) so maybe take that on board as some of them may be laughing at him but may really like him. As i got older i obviously knew how unkind it was and never did it again.
Only my opinion and it might not be best for you but i would maybe try the natural route if your are nervous of the medication as people like Jenny Mcarthy have tried it for her child and i know friends who have got changed kids from it. I am going to give it a go soon.http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/385209/jenny_mccarthy_tells_oprah_that_autism.html?cat=5 . I might get an appointment with Jan De Vries , he is brilliant. Apparently someone said that things like gluten can have like a narcotic effect on some kids which got me thinking as their senses are really heightened often.
But as i say that is what i am going to do and it may not be for you. You have to do what is best for you. So whatever you do i hope it helps you and the children and gives you some peace as i have just one nightmare one and you have 2 so you must have a very hard time.0 -
Thank you for your comments. I suppose I was expecting it but they said age 7 and I never thought this morning they might say he had it. Funny really, he has been diagnosed with Oppositional Dispute Disorder which is ADHD for younger kids - so I did nkow it was coming. I am not sure what I expected after being told, it was kind of like being deflated really. It just felt weird. He is really good st school and the teachers said they had never seen Ryan like he was this morning hiding under the chair and refusing to speak or look at anyone. It was only when the train set came out that he came out from under the chair - in fact he got under the table which was about a foot under the ground, he got on his belly and crawled under it.
Then they all went out and spoke about us which was just awful, the doc, salt and 2 school teachers all went off. You just imagine them saying all sorts really.
About Transporters - I was suggested this by my ADHD Autism group and there is a link here to episode 1 http://www.thetransporters.com/watchep1.html Am I on my own in thinking that it is a really, very disurbing copy of Thomas and Underground Ernie?0 -

Thanks Sue,
I am just back from the school and spoke to the SENCO who came this morning, I asked her if I had heard right about the DX as the more I thought on things I thought I might have got it wrong (you know how it is) and she said no, he has ADHD but has to have more investigation for his Autism.
It was nice to speak to her as she said that she did not even think life was so bad for us and that the doctor was also shocked as having read the reports from the school expected a different boy to the one who came into the room - and the school had seen a different child in that room today and that they thought I was doing a fantastic job but that it must be very hard and stressful. They said it was nice to get an insight into what goes on at home but I still feel really, really embarrassed about having to sit there and tell them all about my family - or lack of it as we do not speak to them. Dad never wanted us and abused mum, mum was drunk because of my dad, etc... Mortifying really.
Yesterday things really got on top of me and I cried because I had just had enough. I think that is the first time ever but I also think it was more of the appointment looming - although I did not think I was worried about it to be honest. I have had the worst headache ever and even painkillers did not touch it and it actually woke me up last night. I came back from the appointment was milling around and realised the headache had gone. Funny what your subconcious can do!0 -

No, that really is disturbing. Very disturbing. :rotfl:They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -

I showed that ep to both my sons (individually) a couple of weeks back. My youngest also has delayed social skills.
I expected the 6yo to poopoo it and 3yo to think it was great and be fascinated... (he loves Thomas)
In fact, our 3yo was alarmed and kept shrieking for it to be switched off and the 6yo said it was awesome, can we get the DVD...
How could I get it so wrong???

Hope its of use to someone0 -
Well....my son's girlfriend has applied for her DLA. She left it too late for the CAB to be able to help her before the date on the form, so we've had to do it ourselves (son helped her and phoned us and we gave some suggestions too). Neither of them were happy to ask for an exension on the date.
I hope she gets the DLA, but what IS pleasing is my son's attitude. Normally he would get very stressed and anxious at the thought of fillling in an official form. But because he had to be the 'strong' one in the partnership, he has taken this one in his stride and approached it very sensibly.
Keep everything crossed, everyone!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0
