Hi there I have an 8 year old daughter who probably has Asperger's although still waiting for a diagnosis. the national autistic society are brilliant with anythiong you need to know.
https://www.asd-forum.org.uk is a forum where you can talk to people who really KNOW how you feel. Thay might have details of a local support group for you.
If you want to talk to me at any time drop me a PM:)
((hugs))) hope you can get some support as you need it as much as your son does0 -
Pcco - just wondered if you agree with the diagnosis?
I was told by an educational psychologist that my son had aspergers when he was 8. The diagnosis was later overturned by a clinical psychologist who said his only "problem" was a very high iq and now at a different school he is really thriving and most of his more autistic seeming behaviour has disappeared.0 -
Hi I agree with the other posters about the National Autistic Society. They have been a big help to us in finding information as my 4yr old is suspected to have an autistic spectrum disorder.
Your local contact a family may be of help to you.

You will need to request to join the group and give reasons for wanting to do so but it is a group of people who are so helpfull and there are lots of people in the same situation as yourself. Some days with my son it feels like he's driving me mad:mad: and it's just good to have someone else who knows what it's like to feel the same way as you do:T
Hope this helped

Not sure if you mean online support or "in the flesh".
Online I'd recommend:
raisingkids who have a section on their discussion board for autism/ aspergers
http://www.raisingkids.co.uk/forum/display_forum_topics.asp?ForumID=11
or aspiesforfreedom who have a parent part to their discussion board:
http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com/forums.php
or there's: http://www.info.autism.org.uk/Pages/Index.aspx?gn=292
which is the "Autism Services Directory" (formerly PARIS) maintained by the NAS which will help you find services in your area.0 -
I am sure alot depends on how it affects them. DLA may be a possibility, so start by getting a claims form, and get help to fill it in. If you get DLA then you may be able to get a bus pass & cinema card. Not very helpful, I know, but just something that came to mind.
For mild Asperger's that seems unlikely, but if you want to explore it I'd look at the stickies on the Benefits board.
DS1 has mild Asperger's, diagnosed at 12. He's now 19 and would definitely pass for 'normal', ie if you didn't know you probably wouldn't realise. But he did stand out a bit at school.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thanks to you all for replying i will look into all the bits youve told me about best wishes to you all0

Hi, sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis. I have an 18 year old daughter with Asperger's. I would advise you to contact a local support group if you can. If not, maybe you could start one! There are bound to be others in the same position as you (there's a lot of it about) and a problem shared is a problem halved as they say.
Good luck!Ellie

Hello
Is everyone still here?
Oh we're still waiting. I was going through this thread and realised that it was 5 Dec when I first went to the Dr and 19 Jan when we had the first hearing test. It's now 21 March and we're still waiting for the 2nd hearing test appointment to come through. I'm getting so fraustrated. I suppose it doesn't help that we have just moved to a totally different area so we'll probably have to start at the bottom of the waiting list.
Oh what can I do? I feel so useless just sitting around and waiting. I'm going to go and register with a new GP today. I might ask about the 2yr assessment (our HV never called me after the new year to see us) to try and get things moving faster.
On a good note, I feel that Aidan has come out of his world a bit. When I take him to the park he will mostly play by himself but will sometimes also go up to other children and babble to them.
My thoughts have moved on from autism and onto simply developmental delay in communication and understanding. Anyway, what ever it is we desperately need to see the right people to help us. Why is it so hard.
Seriously thinking about going private. I know it's going to cost an arm and a leg but what options do we have?Dummie0 -
i hope you can badger some people into doing more for you - you shouldn't have to pay to go private and you should be able to have a 2 year check if you feel you need one!
we get 2 year checks and my health visitor is already talking about roo's lack of speech. my eldest was referred to speech therapy at 18 months old and if roo needs it after his 2 year check he will get a referral too. you should be entitled to the same provision as i am!
can you find out when your hearing appointment is likely to be? for one of my eldest's appointments i had to ask them again because it had been a long time and they simply hadn't put him on the waiting list despite thinking that they had!
do you know any other parents locally from toddler groups etc? it might help him to meet up with somebody he knows (sort of!) at the park, at least then the other child's parent will be chatting to you and their child is more likely to stay close to and chat to your boy.'bad mothers club' member 13
