Congratulations to you Drawingaline - I am completely terrified too as although I have done similar work in the past I have had a career break, kids, different headspace etc so I am well and truly feeling it too. We can hand hold each other.. What day do you start? I'm on the 13th Jan.

  • So last night I completed the dreaded divorce finances stuff and this then lead me on to thinking more and more about my future plans. My ultimate financial goal is to be able to stand on my own two feet without relying on anyone. My gorgeous partner is a bit older than me and is doing a wonderful job of supporting me financially while I get back to where I want to be. I have made really good progress but still a long way to go. I live in London and owned a lovely house with my soon to be ex H. Anyway one of the big sadnesses of splitting up was leaving my house and I have always felt driven to buy another house, ideally in similar location to where I live. Sadly I couldn't ever really afford to buy my old place but it does give me inspiration to get something smaller. Anyway with the new job, divorce payout and having a rough idea how much this smaller house currently costs I have worked out I need to save a ridiculous £145k. So I know this is a tall order with many factors but I keep a spreadsheet logging my savings and debts and I have added an extra line showing how far I am from my giant house deposit - currently £136,445.24 but I think in life its good to reach for the stars and you never know I might just reach them!

  • Hope you don't mind but I'm in a blue mood this evening so I felt I needed to post an evening update. Today I had a reasonable day - took the kids to one of the large parks a short bus ride away. Took snacks and football and had a good time. Kids wanted to get ice creams from the park cafe but now that christmas is over I need to rein in the spending so instead we had chocolate cake at home. Parks are not daft - ice cream was £2.50 per person so easily saved £7.50 considering x 2 kids and a cuppa for me. I also completed the online paperwork handing in my resignation on my current job so I am feeling a bit glum from it but it needed to be done. I think I'll treat myself to a glass of wine while ironing my work shirts and find something fun to watch on Netflix. Don't fancy anything on the main tv.

  • I'm quickly out of my blue mood. As much as I try not to let change worry me it does. Anyway the managers at my old work know I'm going & I told a couple of people. I'm not big on fuss and trying to keep it small news. Anyway onwards and upwards.

I'm a fan of home made soup so I think might make myself and OH butternut squash soup today...yummy!. I need to make an appointment with the bank to open joint account with OH & I want to investigate life insurance and writing a will..all tasks i needed to do but not got around to it.

  • I start training on the 6th. After a few weeks I will be based from home. I am still doing my self employed job two days a week atm too. Going to busy!

Loving your goals. I have the mortgage in ynab so I can see the progress. Its a bit depressing, but I like to know where I am.

Good luck Drawingaline - I'm finishing my weekend job the day before starting the new job. Depending on how the new job goes I'm already thinking how can I get a second income. Maybe trying for a saturday job or a bit of adhoc in the summer. Need to keep bringing in the extra ££'s. I'm still studying too so need to remember not to take too much on... I am very good at doing this!

    What is "ynab"?

  • Happy new year everyone!

Last night I watched the london fireworks from a very far distance, went to one of my local parks and enjoyed them and others for free! Good bit of MSE bringing in the new year :)

Yesterday I finalised all the online forms for the new job, so they are now done and sent so roll on for the 13th. Not upto much today - just taking the tree down with the kids and getting back to normal life. We have a new small chest freezer arriving next week so I need to clear some space in the kitchen for it. The freezer is a mse purchase, the idea is to make more meals from scratch to pull out of the freezer. My partner doesn't cook, so its to make everyone's life a bit easier.

We are looking into getting a small storage unit. I know this goes against MSE principles but when we moved places in the summer we lost access to the loft space and currently surrounded by boxes and its a cause of conflict so instead of continually growling at each other we are going to get the unit. I'd like to de-clutter but my partner has other ideas...!

'ynab' is 'you need a budget' budgeting software I use to help me.

I completely understand re non decluttering partner. Most of our house is stuffed with my husbands stuff, although he has got better over the last 20years! We had a storage unit or a while when we lived in a flat with two kids. It really helped when we put it on the market, but we didn't keep it once we moved.
