    Or a 20p coin has 3mm rims.

The problem with that is that it's great for selling new tyres (fear really DOES sell!) but it's really not good for your pocket, and it's really very, very, bad indeed for the environment.

At 3mm most tyres still have around 1/4 of their legal mileage left in them, so changing at that sends 20% more impossible-to-recycle tyres into the waste stream (it also, conveniently, sells 20% more new ones for the cynics among you....)

That's a LOT of landfill over the global fleet!

And for years I thought the bottom of the 20 to the edge was 1.6mm.

Not measured exactly, but an old 20p piece looks to have about 3mm rims/ridges, and a new 20p piece looks to have about 2mm rims/ridges.

As for the skid risk, that's easy - only drive when it's dry & sunny ;)

Trouble is, the 315bhp at the rear wheels needs careful handling if I'm "adventurous" leaving a roundabout even in the dry :rotfl:

Not my favourite firm, but some useful advice ..

As a long term Motability customer, I have to say that I have never had an issue or complaint about Kwikfit service. I have used Kwikfit in two different areas where I lived and now use the Grimsby workshop, which has always carried out work efficiently and courteously. 5 years ago I was traveling home on the M25 when I had a problem. I made it to the nearest Kwikfit (thank you Google!) had a new tyre fitted and was on my way within an hour, together with local advice regarding the best route back to the M25, missing roadworks and long delays. As an ex-workshop foreman, I appreciated all that very much.

The cynic might say that is possibly because Motability has given the tyre and steering alignment contract to Kwikfit, and they do not want to lose it. I can only state what I know of the workshops I have used. There are some questionable stories here, no evidence supplied, maybe hearsay? "jabbing a screwdriver into fleet vehicle tyres?" Preposterous, where is your evidence? A heavily-embellished Sun story?
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I had the tyres fitted at Kwikfit on Saturday and a free alignment check was carried out, one of the front wheels turned out to be misaligned and I was given a quote of £69 to fix it.
I probably would have told them to go ahead if not for the advice I received here, so I said no and they didn't push any further. I will look around to see if I can get the alignment done cheaper elsewhere. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience and I am quite satisfied with their service. Thank you all for your comments! :)

If your alignment is too far out it will show up as uneven tyre wear - were your tyres unevenly worn ?

My son just got a good deal at KwikFit. The mobile fitter came on time, fitted and balanced the 2 new tyres and swapped rears to front after balancing the old rears (which must have previously been perfect as the small local that fitted the tyres did not need to put any weights on !) all in the price.

Yes, at my last MOT it showed that tyre uneven wear on the outer area so I wasn't too surprised to hear about the alignment. Good to hear that your son had a good experience with Kwikfit!
