Several years ago I didn't work and lived very frugally compared to now. I budgeted and worked out the cost of everyday things (tea, coffe, cereals etc) and then divided the rest by seven to get what I could spend on a day's dinner. If I spent more one day then it was baked potatoes the next.

Anyway, our next door neighbours used to laugh at this becuase they had no need to worry about money and couldn't see how 60p here or 30p there could matter. For a while we used to share Sunday lunches, when it was her turn she would buy frozen roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings, frozen veg, frozen cheesecake etc. Mine would be similar but made from scratch - won't state the obvious!

Every week she would tip milk down the sink and throw away food she hadn't used BUT if they went anywhere, they would park miles away to save paying for parking or quibble over the last penny splitting the car parking fee, they NEVER bought a cup of tea out, always took a flask, worked out the number of miles they got to a gallon, noted mileage and charged passengers the cost ...

Most of us are 'tight' about something in sombody's view.

Queenie you always put things so well.

I think it happened to a lot of us that we came for the other boards and I too saved from Martin's and posters advice on car ins home ins gas elec etc. but as has been pointed out there are only so many tmes you can use these things.

MSOS now is my first port of call. I hardly ever look at the freebies board and occasionally the grabbit. I have learned so much from OS and like most others saved loads on my food bills not by being *tight* scrimping or compomising on quality but simply wiser spending.

Long may OS live and keep generating fun, good atmosphere, support and more tips. :T :A

I'm like a lot of other Old Stylers - I came to this board via the others, but now stay away from the shopping ones unless I need something, as I don't want/need anything and haven't the spare cash for larger impulse buys. I have the cheapest utilities and insurance, don't need mortgage or loan advice, have limited opportunity to save but am happy with what I do manage and am neither a student or a Silver saver (yet). I do frequent the Arms and go through stages of posting there.

However, here is 'home'. Here are my (virtual) friends, with whom I can swap recipes and ideas or ask for info about something as mundane (to others) about making proper gravy. I don't have to price each meal, although I have once or twice for the sheer hell of it - knowing that because I've shopped wisely I can cook huge amounts of healthy food for a fraction of the ready cooked price. I like the fact that I now don't do all of my shopping at Tesco's, but put business the way of local traders, with locally sourced food. That's money saving in lots of different ways too.

If you were to actually come to my house, you would see a family that is asset rich, but cash poor because we gave up the rat race in the south-east to come north, with Mr TM earning much less and me giving up work all together. I don't have a weekly/monthly budget for food as I sometimes buy in bulk so that wouldn't work for me but I do know we eat well and much more healthily than a lot of others. I have friends who don't budget their food, take trips away when they want, buy designer clothes and have a big house and expensive cars. She will buy food from from M&S, when she could just as easily do it at home. (In fact, each to their own, but I can't see the point of M&S food - expensive and most of the ready meals etc are the same as other stores, just in M&S packaing with higher price) However, they have NO money left. She has admitted he lies awake at nights wondering how to make ends meet. Luckily, we're not like that. If we can't afford it, we don't get it until we've saved up (very old fashioned, I know) I like being an Old Styler. Come to my house for tea - you'll get well fed, we'll even give you wine :), you'll be made to feel welcome and I won't ask for anything in return.

    Your round, I believe :D:D

Let's just say - you can lead a horse to water.....

However, she is slowly coming around to old style thinking, having watched me. I have suggested this site, 'once or twice' :D but I don't want to put her off completely by going OTT.
