Or as I would call it low! 3 Bed semi's, this house currently 13.3 a day, last house more 16 (had an electric shower).

I think "average" usage is very misconstrued because you want a median not a mean which I suspect is used (Not that I looked into it much since averages mean nothing anyway).

Quite apt you say that, as I use median to work out my average daily use on my spreadsheet.

Median is so much better than mean, as it ignores the outliers.

Yes, I suppose 6 kW a day is low for a 3 bed semi, but is more realistic than <1 a day,

According to other fellow money savers on here were still too much !

Average Kw per day in a 3 bed house is roughly 6 Kw, some even say they only pay £1 on electricity/gas per day.

I cut and economize as much as I can in a 3 bed house but still average 15-25 Kw per day and £2.5-3.50p per day on both gas and electricity which is apparently too high also.

Either people are sitting in the dark with the boiler and telly switched off or were doing it wrong !

I have posted a new thread here:

Can anyone give me any ideas?

    Thanks

This may not be of any use but I recently had the same issue as yourself and posted a week earlier a thread here:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/76131074#Comment_76131074

In my case however my British gas direct debit went from roughly 85 quid to £170, but working out my yearly bills from 2016-17-18 and dividing the yearly amount by 12 I found 85 quid was way too little and it needed to be £165ish, so not sure what British gas have been doing for this many years.

But I am also a high energy user so am trying to find the high energy culprit have asked for help here:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/76175705#Comment_76175705

So maybe some ideas of high energy use may show up there in future.

We certainly don't sit in the dark or in the cold. Admittedly we don't watch much TV. We both shower daily with the electric shower. Washer dryer is on 2 or 3 times a week. Dishwasher perhaps once a week on a Sunday we prefer to hand wash the pots the rest of the time. Combi boiler.

This was our energy useage for July (2 adults 3 bed detached 2019 new build)

If it's the instantaneous type that heats the water using full price electricity that's one of the main culprits; It's probably about 10kW so you can do the sums:-

    2 people x 0.25h x 10kW x 365 days = 1,825kWh p.a. ! At 15p/kWh that's £274 p.a.
Given that your gas use some days is zero, that seems to be the case, but how do you heat the hot water?

The same amount of energy delivered to the shower by a 90% efficient gas boiler at 3p/kWh would cost 1825 / 0.9 x 3p = £61.

The days with £0 gas use were the days that we were on holiday. Our hot water is heated via a combi boiler.

We are thinking about having a second shower fitted over the bath in the main bathroom that will run from the combi boiler rather than an electric unit. We really like the electric shower in the en suite but it would be nice to have a shower in the main bathroom as well.

ETA: The day with much bigger gas useage than the others (20th July) was when the contractors were doing some minor work to the en suite so we both had baths instead of showers.

    You should share the shower.
    It's much more fun :).

Our electric use has tanked since we had a smart meter installed. 2 adults (sometimes 3) we now use approx 11kw per day over the last 8 months since install, and that's with a 25p per day standing charge.

    3 x 32" to 50" LED TVs
    1 undercounter fridge
    Tall fridge freezer
    2 chest freezers
    Washing machine
    Dishwasher
    Tumble dryer
    Electric oven
    2 electric showers
    All energy saving bulbs
TVs, xbox, PS4 all on standby
Average 3 to 4 loads of washing per week
    Tumble dryer twice a week
    Dishwasher on every other day
2 showers per day at least sometimes 3 if housemate has partner staying over.

Electric DD is £60 and in credit to tune of £80.

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

I hope your facts are correct and that you're not going to receive a nasty shock !

Energy consumption is measured in kWh, kilowatt hours not kilowatts. Your DD amount may be way too low and could rocket when recalculated. What is your actual consumption based on accurate meter readings, not mere estimates? Then do the sums based on unit rates.

There were some record high temperatures (notably in February) so that will have reduced consumption as well.

Hey Gerry1, according to my app we have used 2561kwh since Jan when the meter was installed.

Is my maths right? I divided 2561 by 8, then by 4 then by 7 to get a daily rate?
