Massive increase on electric use
Comments

Sse actually commented on the spike in usage since May. The increase is to pay for electric used not estimated so essentially I have a debt with them0

As mentioned above your current usage is around 6Kwh/day, which seems entirely reasonable.
Perhaps your previous meter was faulty (in your favour)?0 -
The problem with just waiting for a bill to come in is that you've used the energy but dont know when, where or why.
Putting just a little effort in, say once a week to read the meter(s) will give you a feel for the amount of energy that you are using and any anomaly will become apparent giving you the opportunity to investigate and do something about it.
If you've got a smart meter then you've got the IHD or could even check your online account to ensure that your consumption is being properly recorded and is in line with your expectations.
If you do'nt monitor it you cant control it.
I read ours weekly so I know if something has gone awry because I know roughly what my weekly consumption should be.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
From the readings you gave, you have used 1084 kW in 6 months, which works out around 180 kW a month.
This works out around 6 kW a day, which is pretty normal.
You say your usage has gone up by 600%. If this was the case, then your previous daily usage would have been less than 1 kW a day. I find this very hard to believe, as a fridge freezer uses more than this in a day. If it was true, then using 20p for your standing charge and 15p as your unit rate, your yearly electricity bill would have been less than £130.0 -
OP- Have you looked at your IHD - is this "spike" maintained every day, same time every day, same every week ? On face value you have a increase on a very small consumption.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

I would love to hear the explanation as to why people are getting into these sort of problems with smart meters as one of their major advantages is that it stops all this happening - or is that just another bit of bull!!!! in the cluster!!!! that is the smart meter programme ?0
-
molerat - is it a case of "too much information" that ends up confusing users ? We hear of spikes and base load "problems" where actually these are probably just day to day use.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

I think this is what has caused the panic, rather than looking at unit consumption.0 -

Or as I would call it low! 3 Bed semi's, this house currently 13.3 a day, last house more 16 (had an electric shower).
I think "average" usage is very misconstrued because you want a median not a mean which I suspect is used (Not that I looked into it much since averages mean nothing anyway).0
