Just checked my online BT bill for Nov which will be taken from my bank a/c in Dec.
I see the cheeky sods have made a "one-off charge" for the FREE! 1571 service!
Anyone else had this?
(Apologies if this has been mentioned before - not a regular on this board )

BT will charge you £1.75/month (£5.25/quarter) for Caller Display if you don't make 2 chargeable calls per month (if you're billed monthly) or 6 chargeable calls per quarter (if you're billed quarterly).
Similarly, BT will charge you £1/month (£3/quarter) for 1571 if you don't make 2 chargeable calls per month (if you're billed monthly) or 6 chargeable calls per quarter (if you're billed quarterly).
So, that's either 2 x 4½p calls or 6 x 4½p calls if you make sure those calls are evening or weekend calls of less than an hour to UK 01/02 numbers. These can be the same 2 (or 6) calls.
In summary, the cost to keep both (not each) is 27p per quarter. (You can also use Friends and Family numbers to reduce this)
The above is on BT Option 1 - if you are on BT Option 2 or 3, BT don't care if the call is chargeable or inclusive (i.e. to a landline not a 0800 number)
If you use another carrier for your calls, prefixing a number with 1280 will route that call via BT.
This has been the case for a while..

Thanks Sunil.
I've had Onetel as my CPS provider for about 3 years now and BT have never charged me before for 1571 and I'm on Option 1.0 -

The charge/call requirement for the 'free' Caller Display service has been enforced for about a year.
I believe the charge/call requirement for 1571 came in on 1 May 2007 but that the BT bill stuffer had been warning about it since January his year.
At the same time, BT announced that should you not use your 1571 mailbox for 90 days it will be suspended and cleared. It will be reinstated on dialling 1571.

0800 numbers are chargeable numbers - however the charge is zero.
Also, if you are on CPS, don't forget to dial 1280 before calling the 0800 number.0 -

I think 1571 kicks in after 7 rings - to cancel it call BT on 150 and ask.
You may also be able to cancel it on BT's website

CANCEL 1571 ONLINE.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Well I've just received my November quarterly bill and have found the 1571 'one off charge' on there also.
The thing is I use paperless billing and at no point have I been informed by BT that this charge was coming in. Is it therefore even legal for them to charge me it?0 -
Thanks Quentin, cancelled within 24 hours of the request.0
