As you know, you can use Rufus to download and create the media, choosing 32 bit. Choose MBR as opposed to GPT for the partition choice.
Alternatively you can use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. No key necessary if Windows 10 has previously been installed to the Compaq

It had Windows 10 installed on it. I read about the wuindows tool and that said I needed a licence, so assumed I would need one. I have a windows 10 repair disc but it is 64 bit.

They just mean that for people who are not on an upgrade path or haven't already had it installed. Your circumstances cover both.
So no key will be necessary with either Rufus nor Microsoft's Tool.

Have scrapped the idea completely on installing any form of Linux and reverted to Windows 10 and got straight on the internet with no problem. Thankis to all who offered advice, but unfortunately to no avail.

Did you fit the SSD to the Compaq?
