I am quite happy to try anything but unfortunately do not have the knowledge so have to rely on simple advice from other people to talk me through it.

I chnaged from Mint to Ubunto becauise I was under the impression, from others, it would be easier but with Mint I know where the terminals are so I am going to reinstall mint and enter the command you say then get back on here. an hour or so.

    If wireless not working after reinstall and pressing the Wireless button doesn't work, try;
    sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

    sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

I click on NETWORK and it shows

Wired ....... shows .Cable unplugged plus Hardware Address

Vodafone (which I entered by using +) which shows not connected and user name (my name)

    Network Proxy Method none/manual/automatic.
    Configuration Number ( empty box)
Apply system wide, which if clicked requires a password. AIs that the Vodafone Key. I could just click it and see but am worried I will do something irretrievably wrong.

Is it Vodafone that provides your broadband/fibre connection at home?
Confused as to how you were connected when navigating to BT Sport. You seem to be doing things without confirming with the helpers beforehand.

Internet available via Ethernet it appears. But definitely too much confusion. Which is why I stayed out. Haven't used Linux for ten years.

We do know what hardware is installed. I indicated in in my very first post on the subject, on the 11th, here; https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/60310966#109

    It's the (Broadcom) BCM94311MCG

    Trying to stay out here...

Post #4 gave the following link to the official ubuntu documentation:

    e.g. Using the Terminal

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Entering commands using the terminal window is very similar to entering commands at the Windows Command prompt.

However you think of commands as garbage only for geeks!
In post 10 the op asks where to enter commands so I'd assume he hadn't found that, wouldn't you?
Confirmed in post 30 "I changed from Mint to Ubunto becauise I was under the impression, from others, it would be easier but with Mint I know where the terminals are".

Being similar to entering commands using windows assumes he has entered commands using windows.

Commands look like nonsense to me, sorry if that offends you. If you consider yourself a geek that’s your choice but I haven’t said that.

Wow. That must make for a frustrating experience!

    Then why install Linux? :-/

Wouldn't Windows be easier for your needs?
Why frustrating? I go online, use office, store, move and copy photos and music. It does what I want. There's nothing frustrating about not doing something you don't want to do. Many people may find this hard to believe but linux can provide a functional os. Fiddling with it isn't compulsory.

Installed as an alternative to dated xp which from memory other sites and browsers wern't happy with.
