what are these for on (some) lights, it is almost impossible to see the green/amber. Only the red is 'uncovered'. ?

The louvres are used at more complex junctions to restrict the sightlines so that as far as possible the signal lights are only visible to drivers the signal is intended to control. Thus to avoid drivers thinking "their" light is Green when it isn't because the light is not intended for them.

As above. Red is often not louvred as mistakenly stopping (on green) is generally safer than mistakenly going (on red).

I know what you mean about the lights being difficult to see from the direction they're supposed to control. I've always assumed, probably incorrectly, the louvres aren't correctly adjusted.

Also makes it harder to anticipate the lights when yours is on red so less chance of an [STRIKE]ambler[/STRIKE] amber gambler and wannabe drag racer meeting in the middle.

edited to correct typo, as expertly spotted by z1a. All hail the Observant One!

Not sure how its dangerous. They limit the view to only those that need to see them.

Waste of time and money? How much do you think they add to the cost of traffic lights at a junction?

:D Well spotted, you pass your observation standards test and will no doubt spot traffic lights even with louvres added to confuse you!
