Wrong date of birth input when applying for credit

I am wondering if anyone can help me please.

I applied for a new mobile phone/contract online...

I then received an email back advising my credit had been refused!

After speaking with Vodaphone they advised that in an 'admin' of mine I accidentally put my date of birth wrong! DOH!

What I would like to know is whether this will show up on my credit file as refused (by using my address or bank details) or because my D.O.B was wrong they would have not been unable to identify me as a person and there for refused it..

Vodaphone seem to have not a problem offering me another contract but don't want to apply for more credit if it has been noted and I would like to have it removed before pursuing more credit.

Many thanks in advance
Amy

It will just show us as a search.
  • A few years back I “helped” my husband apply for an Egg credit card.

All went through fine and it wasn’t until they asked for dob as a security question to access online banking that we realised I’d got it wrong. He kept the account open for years, having to remember to enter his incorrect dob every time he logged in. He didn’t let me forget that for a LOOONG time

It doesn’t seem to have done his credit file any short or long term damage.
  • The search will show.

You have no grounds for getting it removed though.
  • Agreed... but i am hoping (if it shows) that they will be able to help out of goodwill as i will still take the credit with them...
  • oh bless! I thought i would just do it online as well to save the hassle.... but that sure showed me ay!

It is not a negative marker. It is a neutral marker (neither positive nor negative). You have nothing to be concerned about.

And welcome to the forum Amy :)

Edit: Some creditors state that you cannot make a new application for six months following a decline. You may need Vodafone to do a manual credit check if you have heart set on them. :)

  • Would this still have been able to identify me then do you know? MT
  • You can ask them to remove it but they’re not obliged to do it since it’s not an error on their part.

One search won’t have a drastic effect on anything anyway
  • thank you for you reply.

I hope so... I have a good credit score never had any problems getting credit/ mortgages in the past and are usually really careful with stuff like this... but i am now just having terrible thoughts that this is going to haunt me in the future and stop me being able to apply for further mortgages etc and i will be in the 'tick if you have ever been refused credit box' category!

Will i have to declare this on anything in the future?

What part of the DOB did you get wrong - the year? Was it a substantial difference e.g. 1980 to 1950?

Your 'error' will have been noted with National Hunter for fraud prevention purposes, so if you apply for credit in the future, lenders will be able to check their records too but assuming it was an innocent mistake, should drop off in 6 months time, or max period of 6 years.

There is no such thing as a credit score, this is a marketing gimmick made up by the credit reference agencies. No one sees your imaginary score but you. You have a credit history though. Your raw data. This is what matters.

One failed credit search won't matter much in the grand scheme of things, just make sure you double check everything you enter in future. No you won't have to declare it on anything in the future. It's literally just a failed credit search, nothing more.
