Prepaid meter

I was in a rented property in 2013 and moved out February 2014. When there I used a prepayment meter for gas and electric.
I have just been contacted by a company claiming I owe eon money and the account wasn’t closed until August 2014.
They can see when my last payment was but have told me I am still liable for this.
Does anyone know where I stand with this?

If you owe the money, you owe the money ... and will always owe the money until you die or the creditor agrees otherwise, unless you pay it.
Have you spoken to Eon about this?0 -
I wasn’t living in the property when this debt has been accrued though. I am pretty sure I closed the account in the February also.
It has been passed onto another company to who I have spoken to but I was just looking for further advice0 -
Did you register with the existing supplier when you moved in and use the key/card they sent you for your account (EON?). When you left did you contact them with a closing meter read and say you were leaving.
If a debt collection agency is chasing you for payment and say the account wasn't closed until August, sounds like perhaps you didn't close the account and maybe the account change was only notice when new tenants moved in and did something about it.
You should contact EON with the details you have and give them the dates you stayed in the flat and request a breakdown of what they think you owe them, because as far as you are concerned you left on x date and shouldn't owe them anything after that. If they disagree and you have no actual proof of those dates, you may be liable to pay the debt.0 -

You don't seem to mention what the charges actually refer to/when they were incurred.
It doesn't matter if you were living in the property, if you were the account holder you are responsible for the charges.
The supplier believes the account was not closed until August.
However, if you can provide evidence to the suppllier such as a tenancy agreement that confirms your tenancy of the property ended in February, then the supplier will probably be willing to review the charges.
As suggested above, contact the supplier to resolve.0
