Very slow startup and close down

A while back on here I saw a post telling how to speed up a slow starting computer - could somebody please tell me that again?

This is my old spare laptop running Wind 7 but it was expensive when I bought it and it's been a good one. It takes ages to start up and when I switch off it keeps telling me background progs are still running and do I want to force a close.

Fit an SSD and add more RAM. Don't install junk you don't use.

Why advise someone to spend (more) money when it's possibly a software issue, not to mention you have no idea what hardware they already have?

I just need to tidy things up so it starts and closes a wee bit faster. I don't want to spend anything on it, as my big laptop is going in to get fixed and I might get a big bill for that one (screen turned pink!).
Everywhere it's a Lenovo IdeaPad Z 370.

Is it running Windows 7 or Windows 10?

A clean install of Windows 10 is the easiest way to speed things up. Even better would be to swap the existing old electro-mechanical storage medium, to a solid state drive(costing from as little as £17; https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Integral-INSSD120GS625P5-Solid-State-Drive/16018062594 )

It's a ten minute job for you to swap the drive. Five minutes for someone experienced

That way the device would be fully loaded and ready for use within twenty seconds of pressing the power button.

We can talk you through what you need to do. It's really worth the doing.

The other option would be to wipe the current drive and install Windows 10 cleanly to it. But fitting the SSD is the recommended path. You'll be astounded at the difference.

Many are taking this path to keeping their older machines in use.

It is Win 7. I'm going to have to get my big laptop fixed, so when that's done I'll put this one in to be upgraded, it will be worth it as I love this wee laptop. Thanks for all patient help everybody.
