Any program to see what software or servies is slowing my computer down?

Hi,

I am running windows 7 32 bit 4gb ram and an SSD drive.
Computer does slow down after its on for a few hours especially browsing, restart usually solves the problem.

I have done a anitimalware scan with malwarebyes and also done a virus scan with avast, both clean.

Part of the problem I know is, I have this windows on for a long time without a fresh install, and to be honest I don't have the heart to start all over again.

Anyone know of software other than a tune up utility which are mainly useless, that will show me what active programs or servies are eating up resources or ram so that I could disable them?

Thanks a lot for your help.
:)

    no, reinstall it

you can stare at task manager until you're blue in the face, but you won't find it.

    ^^ Ignore that rubbish

The first thing i would look for is crap and dust/fluff lodged in the vents.
If the machine cant cool its-slef then it will start to run badly after a while.

It sounds to me like you may have something leaking memory, so when it next slows down, press ctrl+alt+del , open task manager and then in the processes tab, order them first by CPU, see if anything is eating all that, and then order them by memory, see if anything has an unusually big number that seems to be getting bigger ..

Dont go anywhere near anything that claims to speed up or tune up your pc, they are all complete garbage and will do the opposite

    Wot AndyPix said.

Also... If it's just web-browsing that slows down, it could be your wifi connection (if you're using one) or a browser add-on issue. Try creating a new profile in your browser (which will be a fresh, clean one with default settings and no add-ons), and test with that.

If it's the whole PC that's slowing down, have a look to see what programs you have running on startup. Lots of programs sneakily add startup entries so that certain processes run all the time, which can slow everything down. The best thing to do would be to google each one to see what they do and whether you need/want them.

You can see the startup programs for the current user and all users respectively in the following registry keys:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you don't want a program to run at startup, but do want to be able to start it when needed, you can create a new shortcut and copy the name and value of the registry entry to the name and location of the new shortcut.

Check that TRIM is enabled on your SSD (unlikely that it won't be, but worth a quick check):

And double-checking that you haven't got any malware slowing you down would be a good idea. Run a scan with your antivirus, Malwarebytes and adwCleaner.

So trolling is giving good advice from the outset, but latecomers belittling it with ('^^ Ignore that rubbish' or 'just ignore him') and providing suggestions which do nothing other than waste time, isn't?

No advice from you on this thread yet thankfully (you've just given out some awful advice in a similar thread, and don't apparently understand why), only pure trolling,

  • Thanks folks,

I have very little on startup, I use CCelaner tools tabl to disable stuff, just winpatrol, a firewall and avast on startup.

Over time I have installed a lot of programes and probably a lot of services running will try and disable a few to see how it goes.

Pc case is clean no fluff in vents, I have windows 10 on pc as well, maybe will try running it for a few days to see how it goes.

One thing I notice about windows 10 is that I can virtually use the internet as soon as it starts, as a network connection appears on taskbar ready to go, even before icon for avast or firewall icon appear, whereas with windows 7 at startup the network icon for internet access is shown as busy on taskbar and internet is last to load.

    Thanks
