Sky Out of Contract

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice if anyone can help.
Last May I moved into my property, I had Sky broadband & phone connected on a one year contract, with discount it worked out as £18 a month. I don’t use the phone for outgoing calls so my bill never changes.
The last few months have been a bit of a blur due to a death in the family following a long illness. Last night I sat down to go through my online banking to address a different matter when I noticed that sky had taken £31 out of my account. When I went back through my banking it turns out they have taken the increased payment of £31 for the last three months.
I phoned them this morning and they confirmed that my contract had ended in May and that I was moved onto a rolling contract and my monthly charge had been increased. I asked why they hadn’t contracted me to tell me my contract was due to or had run out, and their answer was that they told me when I signed up in May last year.
Bit of arguing and they offered to put me on a new deal for 18 month that would reduce my monthly bill to £20, but they refused to address the 3 months where the charged me the increased amount without my knowledge following my contract ending.
Can they do this?

And your contract didn't end. If it ended, they couldn't take money from you as they would have no contractual basis to do so.
EDIT - from 2020 ISPs will be required to tell customers when their minimum term is ending. OFCOM has decided to protect us from not reading the contracts we take out. Personally I think this is a good idea! I signed up over a year ago, a lot has happened since then, it's not much to ask for your ISP to drop you a text / call / email to let you know your bill is going to sky rocket0 -
Yes , obviously they can , but when I rang they offered me broadband +line rental for £18/month...
That's less than the line rental by itself.0 -

It's not spam when they're are letting me know my bill is going to increase from £18 to £31!
They said today that they had messaged me on my Sky ID account, but there is no sign of any messages. In the end they offered to reduce my broadband to £20 a month if I signed a new 18 month contract, and they'd give me a £20 ''good will gesture'' as an apology.
In the mean time I had a quick look on line, the Post Office are offering the same service (speed / unlimited downloads ect) for £15.90 on a 12 month contract...goodbye Sky :beer:0 -
Don't forget that Post Office is resold TalkTalk!0

In an ideal world I would have remembered to check but it's not been an ideal year. The funny thing is, I opted out of promotional & marketing emails but I have still received over 120 of them over the year. But Sky cant send a text or email to let me know my contract is ending?0 -

As has been pointed out it didn't end. The deal you were on ended, your contract continues.
Any time I sign up for anything or renew anything, broadband, utilities, insurance etc I put the end date on my electronic calendar and set a reminder for a month previously. Helps avoid these sort of issues.
Not sure if that is an option for you?Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0
