What happens if I don't top-up my adblue?

My Land Rover has been giving me a message for several weeks to top up my Diesel Exhaust Fluid saying it's "required" within 200 miles.

Out of interest, what will happen if I don't? Will I simply pump some nitrous oxide into the air, or will the car refuse to start?

And where is a good place to get it? I can't say I trust Amazon - I could be buying a bottle of anything.

This is from Land Rover's site:

The message centre displays a series of messages when the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid or Adblue) level becomes low.

    1. The first message states that the DEF level is at a level where a Top-Up is advised.

    2. The second message is accompanied by an AMBER warning icon and states to refill the DEF tank.

    3. The third message starts a countdown of the distance remaining until the DEF tank is empty, after which the vehicle will fail to start.

    4. The final message is accompanied by a RED warning icon and is displayed when the distance remaining is zero and states that no further restarts will be possible until DEF is added to the tank

I find the stuff gruesome as its a chemical 'solution' to air pollution.

Artificial pig urine, which traps particulates [hurrah less exhaust emissions] & than vents the fluid onto the road & thence into the water table.

You end up with the unwanted chemicals in the water streams with bonus urea.

Most motor factors sell adblue in 10 litre containers. Eurocarparts claim they are the cheapest.

    A discovery takes 17 litres!

I thought the idea is the adblue decomposes in the hot exhaust to ammonia (and carbon dioxide), which reacts with the nitrogen oxides to make delicious water* and inert nitrogen. If urea is coming out the tailpipe something is wrong.

    * handy as apparently we are running out of it- where is it going?

Are you sure? I think the products of the reaction are carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water. Nothing goes into the water table other than more....water. A little bit of extra nitrogen gas isn't a problem either, given the air is already 78% nitrogen by composition.

"Yeah your car literally won’t start. "

Its a discovery so you really should not give it any more reasons to not start / breakdown.

You clearly have no understanding of how it works.

what a laugh it will be if it pumps nitrous oxide into the air.
