As already discussed in posts #6 & #8, the family that purchased the tickets don't have any proof that the family of the girl that the ticket was originally purchased for ever agreed to pay for it.

    Exactly what Ive been saying!
Maybe the family should have got something in writing with signatures on at the time of booking just incase something like this happened..then again they have known one another (through the girls friendship) for quite a while so obviously thought they could be trusted and that this would not happen...
We have come to the agreement that we are going to split the cost with the family (I have contacted the airline via phone and it is £115 for the whole trip so works out at £57.50 each)

It's easy to be wise after the event, but how many people would put an agreement between friends onto paper? Friendship is built on trust and if that fails so does the friendship. The only situation I can think of where I would do something formal is if a friend was to ask for a loan. I would formalise that with repayment period etc.

    Agreed!
I seriously doubt that they will be so trusting of this other family in the future. And as we have both said, who would put an agreement between friends onto paper..you wouldn't would you unless, as you have said, it's a loan.
In theory though it was kind of a loan as the holiday was paid in full and the agreement was that it would be paid back in installments before the holiday...

The moral of the story in get the money up front before you pay anything.

The family 'paying it up' would indicate they couldn't afford it but were put in an unfortunate position.
