Moorcroft debt collection and British Gas

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a bit of help and advice please.
When I was living at an old address I was automatically put on British Gas for gas and electricity. I received the usual bills which I paid but there was some confusion regarding how many accounts were under my name/flat.
In early 2018 I received a letter from Moorcroft debt collection in Stockport saying I owe £88.84 for period September to early December 2017. After getting onto the phone with both BG and Moorcroft everything was all sorted and closed. 16 months later I’ve received another letter from Moorcroft advising I owe £88.84 (not a follow on letter - like a new case letter).
I was really annoyed as thought it was all sorted! Spoke to 2 different people on web chat online at BG yesterday and both confirmed no debt and apologised and said that is the end of it (word for word). One lady said she’d send me a letter by email advising I owe no money and all closed etc. Saying don’t worry and it’s debt collections error!
Anyway this never materialised so I spoke to another staff member there who confirmed I don’t owe anything but to send an email asking for a letter. Frustrating! So I did this and still haven’t had a reply. In the meantime I’ve contacted Moorcroft and said what’s happened and they have asked for proof of transcript. I’m reluctant to do this as lots of posts on web say they are dodgy etc. Anyway, today I decided to chase for the letter and the man I spoke to said his colleagues were not correct and I in-fact DO owe the money and I’ve paid for all electricity buy not gas.
It all seems so ridiculous!
Anyone had any experience of anything like this? Now they have said in writing that I do not owe anything can they seriously still request it?
In the meantime I’m anticipating someone knocking on the door and thinking even if they say it’s all resolved will another letter arrive in another 18 months?! 🚪

Ask for proof of debt, bills etc. Have you requested BG contact Moorcroft, have you requested BG send you a letter confirming no debt owed.
Moorcroft will continue, so you need to dispute it, otherwise it could end up with CCJ etc.0 -
Slightly confused, do you have it in writing that the debt is not owed? If so, ignore what they have said now, and provide this to Moorcroft.
Over the years, I have had upto 10 accounts with Moorcroft (currently down to 3), I have found them reasonably OK to deal with as long as you are blunt and tell them what will happen.
I would also consider emailing Moorcroft clearly stating you are disputing the debt and whilst it is in dispute, no further collections attempts can take place.
I would provide them with anything they ask for, so if webchats is the way, just do it.0 -
It’s probably in the “maybe closed - try later” pile in their office and they’re trying their luck to get someone to bite and pay for it.
Speak to BG and ask them to tell MC to stop.0 -
If it were me, I would make an official written complaint to BG (sent via Royal Mail). That way, they would be required to respond in writing to you and you will eventually get a letter confirming zero balance on the account. You then keep that letter safe, just in case...I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Lawabiding - yes I have it in writing in a webcast transcript they emailed to me but the problem is another advisor said that I do owe and the 2 other people who said no money owed were mistaken! My other half is going to call them and ask what the hell is going on! I don’t understand why they have waited so long to send another letter - admin error? Is the transcript saying I do not owe in writing enough to have this all shut down if I send to Moorcroft?0

I spoke to Moorcroft and they weren’t very helpful. They said to send transcript so they can liaise with BG about it. I feel uncomfortable doing this as they shouldn’t even be contacting me in the first place.0

You need to do all this in writing with BG. Forget about phone-calls and webcasts....I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Email the complaints team at BG.
They will pass your case directly to the credit team who will know what to do.0 -

Will all this ruin my credit rating even if it gets sorted?0
