Evidence for that, please. AFAICS, the exclusions of liability [of the bank] are essentially the same for online banking and for apps.
No evidence as such. Plenty of anecdotal information out there regarding the stance taken by banks in these situations. If I as an amateur can see the opportunity for banks to take advantage of the situation then don't you think that these billion £ organisations whose business it is to make as big a profit as possible haven't also recognised the value benefit to them in utilising mobile phone apps also? I'm not arguing that this is the primary reason for banking apps, there are way too many other benefits including security for that, merely this is a consequence/side benefit for the banks.

I'm happy to live in my paranoid little world but it will become/is the banks new default position.

Don't you have WiFi calling / texting on your mobile?

    No.

(This sentence is purely included as my message is too short to post.)

Just as all the online banking interfaces are different. Installing and organising apps on mobiles is child's play.

I have many more than 60 apps on my phone. What's the problem?

Perhaps the biggest obstacle for apps is people's fear of change. In many ways, people's reluctance to use banking apps reminds me of the Red Flag Act of 1865: when the motor car first came to our public highways, they were required, by law, to be led by a pedestrian waving a red flag or carrying a lantern to warn bystanders of the vehicle's approach.

The problem is ,that not everyone desires an all singing, all dancing mobile phone!! I have a perfectly adequate handset which allows me to make phone calls and receive/send texts !(Fancy that!)

No scally is likely to want to steal it, and I'm not stopping in mid conversation (as per many other users of I Phones or Galaxies or ....) to read some inane comment on Faceache!!:(

It's too funny to read the fantasy stories of people imagining what smartphone users do. Keep them coming!

I haven't seen anyone mention yet that these 'mobile' apps will also work on iOS and Android tablets. If you have one with a fingerprint scanner this will be enough for some of the banks and otherwise it can be used in conjunction with a 'dumb' phone for OTP texts.

Some bank apps also make use of the larger screens so they're easier to use and read.

TBH I can't see the moaning Luddites wanting to shop online anyway. Having worked in IT in schools there is a certain group of people who complain, stamp their feet and protest in other vociferous ways at every single change in the use of IT. When solutions are offered, there is always another problem and so on. It's like the lesser-spotted-newt for NIMBYs when housing development is proposed.

I just had this issue trying to put through a payment with my bank. As a layer of security they sent me a text to confirm which I understand, but I have no mobile signal in my house so had to run up the end of the garden waving my phone in the air till I could get a signal. This is fine when it's summer but middle of winter, freezing cold, raining, dark, I don't want to be jumping around up the garden!!
Unless you live somewhere really remote, you can probably find a network that at least gives you enough signal indoors to receive an SMS by ordering a free PAYG SIM online from each of the four main networks (or the smaller MVNO providers that use them). Insert them in a spare phone to find one that shows a signal.

If banking is important / pressing enough for you, you always have the option to nip outside in your break and do your banking on your phone through the app.

Then again, not all mobile phones would facilitate a banking app.

I don't regard myself as a luddite, just someone who has no use for a mobile phone and I don't have one for that reason.

In addition to my Santander current account I have a Barclaycard credit card, and they recently sent me a PinSentry which I have not had occasion to use yet, but if it works as intended it seems to take care of their new enhanced security procedures for making online payments. They have taken responsibility and provided me with a way to meet their requirements. Santander clearly aren't prepared to take similar steps so that I can continue to log in to their online banking service.
