Having moved from Biggin Hill to Newbury over 30 years ago. Was far from easy. There were only the two of us as well.

Totally off topic, but how did you find that move? Did you continue working in London? London to Newbury is exactly the move I am considering making in 2020.

The new high speed trains are supposed to help mor people live away from London and still work there, but will they happen in our lifetimes?

I hope it doesnt as its exactly whats screwed they country (the land outside of London & home counties) so much.
HS2 should be put on hold. Crack on with HS3 then develop HS2 from the north downwards.

    Sounds awful to me.
Doesn’t improve the commute at the London end, in fact increases foot fall.
Moves out high house prices, people have long commutes.
    Lots not to like.

Better to move some of the jobs.

It doesn’t move out high house prices it equalises them.

London property will drop rapidly as workers can now move far away.

    Wishful thinking! :)

You do realise it will probably be at least another decade before the first High Speed trains start running?

It won't as the increased capacity won't scratch the surface of the number of people who work in London, also I doubt that ticket prices will be cheap enough. All it will do is push the commuter belt house prices further out of the city.

Why on earth would anyone want to do a long commute including the usually standing up, arguing, delays, cancellations, drunks etc.

Financially you just swap house prices for train fares.

I love your idea of prices going down and everyone benefitting, but I don’t think its going to happen.

Our commute is improving 15 mins this year, however the London end is still just as slow. A welcome change but it certainly wouldn’t make me move 15 mins away.

As well as that we should look at moving long-term unemployed out of the major cities. It is ludicrous that weary commuters trek to work each day, walking past the houses of people who don’t and likely will never work.

    Totally agree with that.
Plenty of long term unemployed and social housing in central London.

I would go even further a provide shared accommodation.

It wouldn’t provide for millions though.
