My gas and electricity went 'live' on the 12th and 19th of May. The online bit is up and running however, i put my meter readings in the other day and am still waiting for the total owing to be updated. I like to know exactly on a week to week basis how much gas/electricity i have used.

I have no idea, who is telling the truth but i will ring Scottish Power in a day or two to see if the readings have been sent. I will have to check with PowerGen if they say they havent.

Why is nothing ever straightforward anymore?

Dreadful. I had been submitting readings throughout the whole of last year only to have them carry on using estimates, then on the anniversary of opening my account they cancelled the entire charges for the previous year and rebilled me in one go. So I've no idea whether the charges are right or not. And they've messed up the discounts. No replies to the messages I send or some incomprehensible rubbish back that bears no resemblance to what I originally asked. I'm thinking of moving to EDF? Any worse than Powergen d'ya think?

I'm pleased with the way SWEB have handled my account, kept me updated all the time, even when PowerGen tried to grab back my account. Also helps that SWEB has UK customer services.

Shoddy....inconsistent...procrastinating... just a few of the words I would use to describe them. If I'd read this forum before I switched I would have stayed with separate accounts for Gas & Elec. Any savings I've made in money have been swamped by the cost of my time.

<hollow laughter> - changed from pay-as-you-go meters for gas and leccy in July of last year to normal meters, have yet to receive a definitive bill for either from Powergen despite having 4 (count them - FOUR!) visits from the meter man, plus several phonecalls and one attack of the screaming abdabs at a poor callcentre worker (the strategy worked though, I got put through to her supervisor pdq!). Usual story - anything even vaguely unusual gets shunted around the callcentre, nobody takes responsibility, nobody phones back. I once spent 40 minutes on hold and was determined not to hang up just so I could shout at somebody. Apparently they are terminally confused because the company which owns and services the meters is still insisting the old ones haven't been replaced. I'm paying by monthly DD so will probably not get a big surprise when they finally deign to send me a proper bill, but as soon as they do I'm off like a shot.

Well I've just finished off signing up to London Electricity (EDF Energy) and bagging myself 5000 Nectar Points straight off, plus about another 3000 in the first year. On checking my Powergen account tonight I see that they've updated my balance as I put a meter read in for Gas/Elec yesterday, but they haven't bothered to put an updated bill on the site, so I'm left guessing how much the bill is by subtracting the amount that's left off of the amount I had the day before yesterday...

I hope EDF are better than Powergen...at this rate I'll end up using candles and calor gas cylinders...

Just wondering if all the above posters originally signed over to Powergen because they were the absolute cheapest at the time?

The reason I ask is that Powergen appear to be the cheapest for me at the moment (saving of 14% for dual fuel in southwest of England), with the exception of a small outfit called Equigas and Equipower managed by a company called Ebico. This small company is substatially cheaper again (22% saving), but it would appear their prices are going up this summer, but by how much I am not sure.

The main reason for this posting is that I am dubious of changing to such a small company as Ebico, and Powergen, the only really serious alternative, seems to have a lot of complaints against it on these forums.

The only other alternative is to change to one of the others that only offers say a 9% saving, ie less than 40 pounds in my case.

Don't know what to do. Do I take a chance on Ebico (and then they raise their prices), or do I go with Powergen and ignore the bad experiences others have had and take a chance to save 14% ie 71 pounds, or do I just play it safe and stay with the old providers (SWEB and British Gas)?

Looking at all the threads, there is not a single one of the big providers that can save me a reasonable amount of money that is without blemish on these forums. Never switched before and already breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking about making the change.

It does not appear to as simple as say, saving money on your phone bill!!!

Other than PowerGen trying to grab back our supply when we recently switched to Sweb, the years we were with PowerGen and we have switched to them several times during moving we never had a problem with them.

I was 'forced' to switch to Powergen when they took over Amerada (was given chance to cancel if I wished).

I went with the flow and have took up their online Gas & Elect service.

The only problem I had was they were not taking enough to cover the bills so I had to ring them and ask them to increase my direct debit.

About 6 months ago I was approached by Sains who suggested I could save money (and get some Nectar points) so I signed on the dotted line but when I got home, I checked out Uswitch and even with the price increases Powergen was still the cheapest so I cancelled the Sains and stayed with Powergen.

Then in April this year I received the following e-mail.

    "Dear Jean

We have recently had a problem which has affected the discounts in your bills.

As an EnergyOnline customer you’re eligible for a total discount of £43 a year, but unfortunately we’ve not credited your bill with the full amount owing.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused with this mistake. But you can rest assured we’ve now fixed it.

You’ll see the discounts owing to you on your next bill. Any discount owing will be calculated on a daily basis and show as an adjustment. This credit will bring your discounts completely up to date.”

I wasn't even aware that they had not been applying the discount so I give a thumbs up to them.
