WARNING ebay and paypal spoof emails

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could advise me if this email I have just received from Ebay is genuine. It is from "moreinfo@ebay.com", subject "
MC033 A26 Account Security Notice: Restored Account"
The greeting in the message states my ebay usename and email address.
The content of the message is:
"Your eBay account appears to have been used without your permission to send unsolicited emails to other eBay members, including email offers to sell items outside of eBay. It doesn't appear that your account was used to list or bid on any items.
We've already taken steps to secure your account. Your credit card information is stored on a secure server and cannot be seen by anyone.
***Regaining Control of Your Account***
We need you to take the following steps to regain control of your account:
1. Change the password on your personal email account to verify that it is secure and can't be accessed by anyone other than you.
2. Click the "Forgot your password" link on the eBay sign-in page, and change your password using the instructions provided.
3. Click the "Security Center" link found at the bottom of most eBay pages.
4. Under the Protect Your Account heading, click the "Reporting Account Theft" link. Follow the instructions to finish securing your account."
When I go to ebay and click on "my ebay" my password is no longer valid so I'm guessing the email could actually be from ebay, do you think it is safe to do as the letter suggested? also I'm not sure what they mean when they say " Change the password on your personal email account to verify that it is secure and can't be accessed by anyone other than you" I'm not sure what personal email account they are referring to, is it the one with my ISP (zen)?
I'm quite worried how this could have happened as I don't give my details out to anyone.
Thanks for reading,
Julie0 -
I received an e-mail from:
Peter Gibbs (eedlamad4u@yahoo.com)
Asking me to send my item to:
Address: <img alt="" width="1" border="0" height="5"> (Dr) Aj M Ola
Lautech Ogbomosho Department Of Engineering
Ogbomosho,
Oyo State
23402
Nigeria
but I noticed firstly that the guy who won my bid was from the UK and second that the e-mail address this actually comes from is not paypal.co.uk it is:
verify-customers@accountant.com
Obviously I will not be sending my item to this guy! What a t*****
Just thought I would warn anyone else that may come across this.0 -
Sinar: Regarding the above - I definitely recommend changing your e-mail password and then contacting ebay directly and see if this is the case. Try going to the ebay page (don't click on any links in the e-mail) and actually finding the reset password link from there.0

My friend had a nokia n95 which he was selling. and he had a very similar email to yours. Also in one of the auctions a person from nigeria bidded over a thousand pounds for a 6230i. I mean you know that no one would pay that. i just think most of them are pulling a fast one.0 -

I'd hope no one would be that stupid, but unfortunately there will be at least one person...
Sent it to spoof and surprise surprise it's a phishing email..."Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art."

I was caught out by one of these emails just before Christmas - being innocent to this at the time, it looked like it was from a potential customer asking me a question on one of my products so i clicked on it and made the mistake of logging into what looked like ebay. The first I knew of a problem was when my inbox showed 15 listings in the USA for plasma and lcd televisions - they had gone up within 30 minutes of me clicking on the link. I contacted ebay and they were very helpful - they cancelled the listings for me and put my account on hold and credited back the listing fees. I had to follow instructions on creating a new password and re-activating my account. I am certainly not a computer expert but they explained how to recognise one of these spoof emails - just move the mouse over the link or image without clicking your mouse button and the location will show up as text on your screen - i now easily recognise these emails and just delete them - we get at least 3 or 4 a day that our spam filter does not spot. I hope that this helps - please be gentle with me as this is my first post0
