Your get your mobile phone out and show them the charge that appears instantly in you app. If you pay with the right cards.
Which ones?
I have 3 credit cards and a debit card I use for purchases, none of them instantly show EVERY transaction.
I always ask for receipts anyway as like a previous poster I log all my expenditure on a spreadsheet.0 -
I always have a receipt as I collect them and tally them up every week to keep an eye on both price rises and to ensure I can see where my pension is disappearing to

I try to mentally tot up what's on the conveyor belt and get about the right amount of cash out ready, so I'm alerted to their mistakes sooner, rather than later. Of course, that's not always possible... but I do like to take the receipt so I can go to one corner and double check anything I expected to be discounted or anything unusual at all before I leave the shop.
One dopey cashier charged me for my own bag I'd taken in, the store's bag for life.
I also like to take a receipt in case I've looked shifty to the CCTV watchers (you do look shifty if you're worried about looking shifty).... and I fear the "can I stop you a moment and check madam". So I always want a receipt.0 -

Amex, Curve, Revolut.
Virgin MC appears instantly as pending, but doesn't send notifications.
I suspect Monzo and Monese also provide reliable instant notifications as they are app based, although I've not used either sufficiently extensively to be sure.
Most of my card payments are Amex, and when I'm asked if I need a receipt a quick glance at my phone tells me I don't.
But in supermarkets, I currently do need a receipt of I don't scan as I shop0 -

That won't happen unless they actually see you stealing something and are certain about it. They are leaving themselves open to false accusations of theft if they get it wrong; and that can be very expensive for them.0 -
As a side note, you also get instant notifications of spending on cards set up on Apple Pay, and I imagine Android Pay works the same.0

My friend works for Sainsburys and most customers don't want a receipt if they are buying lottery, tobacco or a few items. When she's on the kiosk, where receipt printing is only on request, she automatically gives issues a receipt if a customer is buying clothing, general merchandise - toys, towels, kitchen ware, electronics. Plus those regulars who always want a receipt.
It causes many problems if the customer is on self scan and bought clothing etc and don't bother to get a receipt. If they return an item of clothing or general merchandise with 'Sainsburys' on the packaging , have to refund whatever it scans at on the day and onto a gift card. DVDs, CDs, books and console games without a receipt - forget it!
Before Sainsburys changed their software on their self scans (plus the kiosk) about 15-18 months ago, it printed receipts every single time and very few people never bothered to pick them up and the bin was full of receiptsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. I often don't ask for a receipt if it's just a couple of items and I'm paying with Google or Tesco pay.0

If you aren't given a receipt how can you take something back if you need to?
Went to a spa bar recently and friend used contactless and waited for her receipt. The staff member said "We don't do receipts in the spa bar." When my friend insisted she said incredulously: "well it is contactless so no receipt."
In the end the manager came and went to another room to provide a receipt.
A bit worrying this using contactless and getting no receipt surely open to fraud.0 -
