My worry is that we are in Summer though... when the heating comes on I'm going to cry!

I think that's a good shout re. the water - it's pretty hot, and at the moment we can have 2 showers a day (sometimes 3 if my housemates gf is round) and do the washing up twice and it's still hot. Can't work out where I can turn the temperature down, or adjust the timing though.. will upload a photo later so hopefully someone will be able to give me a hand!
Depending on how cold a winter we get next winter , your monthly direct will double when heating the property comes into it.
Personally I like to do it the old way and build up a credit to cover the winter months. So my monthly direct debit is 1/12 th of the full yearly costs of my energy use.y gas central heating uses at least three quarters of the total gas use in heating between Oct and April. Its off all summer and autumn completely. heating is the largest costs for any property
I don`t mind my supplier having a little of my money in their bank. It gets next to nothing in interest anyway
  • Thanks everyone for your replies - just to confirm, does anyone think there is something actually wrong with the numbers I'm getting? Based on my energy usage, it still feels unusually high considering there is no heating on, no expensive appliances running etc.

I will see what I can do about the water heater, but otherwise, is it just normal to be using that much in Summer on all-electric? Still seems like something isn't right; I just don't believe we are using that much!

I don't feel I can answer that without extracting the water heating from the equation. It might be useful to read the meters before going to bed and when waking up for a few days to get a true reflection of what's going on E7 for water (and currently no heating!) and what's going on everything else?

If your smart meter has a pulsing LED, get a Geo Minim+ and go true detective!

If you have an electric shower you could just turn the water on for baths, Turn it off for 24HR to measure your daily usage with it off.

The average heat loss on a tank is 1-2KWH every 24h, and i would guess the water uses around 6KWH a day in your home.

................ Just bothers me because I don't think we use that much at all! Compared to some houses I've been in where they have TVs/games consoles/computers on in every room! :D

It's not the TV's etc that is the problem (although all the little bits add up) - it' heating, water heating, electric showers.

As per my earlier post I don't think your £800 annual cost is excessive but lots of good advice along the way re meter readings, tariffs, monitoring consumption
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Here is the kwh usage from my statements:
    Feb-March:
    Energy (day) 234 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
    Energy (night) 379 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh

    March-April:
    Energy (day) 251 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
    Energy (night) 391 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh

    April-May:
    Energy (day) 217 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
    Energy (night) 261 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh

    May-June:
    Energy (day) 203 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
    Energy (night) 189 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh

Just looking again at these figures.

Day use seems OK bearing in mind that you cook electric. Maybe look up the specification for your fridge and see what energy rating it's meant to be and compare against a possible super energy efficient replacement. Make sure you're using the lowest possible temperature wash too.

Night use, I'm curious in the 28% drop for May-June if it's only for heating water??
  • Here are photos from the meter cupboard in case anyone spots anything unusual! (I have no idea what I'm looking at!)

  • So the meter reading before I went to bed was
    Total Active Import 04953kwh
    TOU Rate 1 02192 kwh
    TOU Rate 2 02761 kwh

And the reading when I got up (before using any appliances)
    Total Active Import 04957 kwh
    TOU Rate 1 02192 kwh
    TOU Rate 2 02765 kwh

Bearing in mind, overnight the fridge, tv and a radio were still switched on at the wall as well as my phone charging; as well as the immersion heater obviously being on.

Is 3kwh overnight a lot or not much? (No idea what 'a lot' is). Does this indicate the water heater is using too much? Or is this normal (in which case... something else is using all the energy!)

    Thanks!

4kWh overnight is not unreasonable. The immersion heater will be around 3kW and would likely be on for around an hour if untimed.

This is bothering me too - can't work out what that was. The heating was definitely off by April-May, no appliances were bought/changed during that time... I will rack my brains on that one!
