Just thinking, my meter is a smart meter installed in January by my then provider, EDF. Is there a chance they wired it incorrectly or something?
Can your new supplier communicate with the smart meter installed by EDF?
And do follow the advice given as early as post#3 of this site.
If you care to share those annual consumption figures in kWh (inc day/night split), and your supply region, I'm sure someone will be able to find you a much cheaper supplier/tariff than you appear to have chosen recently :money:0 -
Yes, the whirring noise is when the fridge is on - and you can usually spot it shortly after you've had the door open.
We try to put the washing on a rack to dry overnight - but I can appreciate that if you use the washing machine on E7 night rate, then you end up with damp washing first thing in the morning, so it's not easy!
It sounds as if your tank has the separate E7 cheap rate feed from the meter. A photo of the meter might reveal how many connections you have!
You're not doing too badly on consumption at the moment, but I guess your eyes will pop out when you start using the heating. We're a family of two adults & one child in a 3 bed detached cottage and average just under 10kWh per day - but we're gas for heating and hot water.
Did you get an In Home Display (IHD) with your smart meter? It not, ask for one as it'll probably offer a live view of consumption. You will then see just how many more watts the fridge adds as it comes on, you'll see just how much the tumbler drier uses, etc.
The trick is to use the energy hungry devices (hot water heater, oven, washing machine, tumbler drier) as little as possible or on cheap rate and then look at the 24/7 energy stealers, such as the fridge, microwave, TV, DVD, etc.
What you want to achieve is a situation where, when you're asleep at night and no appliances are running, the figure on your IHD wants to be as low as possible - because every 1W of that figure contributes to 8.76kWhr on your bill per year.0 -
13 kWh a day is not totally unreasonable with electric hot water. If the water is too hot you may be able to turn the immersion down a bit but that often comes at the expense of cooler evening water. Do you have a shower - if so what type is it ? You really need to take daily readings for a while, split day and night. Are the billed readings from the smart meter or estimates ?0

Bulb can't communicate with the smart meter yet annoyingly, they've told me it should be done by 2020 - which will definitely help.
As for my usage, I've only been with Bulb since Feb. In that time my meter reading has gone from 1248 (day) + 1006 (night) to 2125 (day) + 2645 (night). That's quite a jump right??
Here is the kwh usage from my statements:
Feb-March:
Energy (day) 234 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
Energy (night) 379 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh
March-April:
Energy (day) 251 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
Energy (night) 391 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh
April-May:
Energy (day) 217 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
Energy (night) 261 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh
May-June:
Energy (day) 203 kWh @ 14.56 p/kWh
Energy (night) 189 kWh @ 7.10 p/kWh0 -

IHD: I had one of these when I was with EDF (still have it in a cupboard somewhere) - was told it wouldn't work once I moved away from EDF? will plug it in and see what it does!
Thanks for the help - will assess again what we are using to see if there is anything we can cut out. Just bothers me because I don't think we use that much at all! Compared to some houses I've been in where they have TVs/games consoles/computers on in every room!0 -

My worry is that we are in Summer though... when the heating comes on I'm going to cry!
I think that's a good shout re. the water - it's pretty hot, and at the moment we can have 2 showers a day (sometimes 3 if my housemates gf is round) and do the washing up twice and it's still hot. Can't work out where I can turn the temperature down, or adjust the timing though.. will upload a photo later so hopefully someone will be able to give me a hand!0 -

+ the statements are based off my meter readings which I do myself (Bulb can't communicate with the smart meter). So there is the other possibility that I've been reading it wrong... it's a really complicated thing with a ton of different displays...0 -

If your supplier cannot communicate with your meter, hopefully you are giving the supplier regular meter readings yourself to ensure accurate billing.
What are your annual consumption figures?
Hopefully you knew them before you elected to switch supplier recently, or if not your supplier be able to tell you what they have assumed in setting your monthly payment.
And I'm still not sure which supply region you are in. You can provide the first part of your postcode if than is an easier alternative.0 -

Sorry, just caught this later post.
So you are reading the meter and supplying the readings to your supplier who are using them
But you are not sure if you are reading the meter correctly?
In which case I would urge you to email photos over to your supplier next time, and they will be able to double check the readings for you0 -
If the IHD doesn't work, and your meter has a flashing LED I'd recommend a Geo Minim+ monitor but it'll set you back £40. But you then see the live realtime consumption.0
