I want car that won't wake up my neighbours
Due to a change of jobs I'm likely to be driving to work more, until a planned railway station is built near my workplace.
My 2011 1.25 litre petrol fiesta is noisier than I would like when starting from cold in the morning. Is there any trend towards quieter starting in the latest cars? For example the latest Fiesta has a smaller 1.0 litre engine, and is designed for frequent engine stop-starts. Is that likely to make starting from cold any quieter?
Ideally I'd like to buy a quieter purely electric car, but those are not yet in my price range, and hybrids are not much cheaper.

What time are you leaving?
I'm surprised something as prosaic as a cooking Fiesta is too loud in the morning - are you sure you just aren't being a bit too sensitive? I mean, it's better that way than the other way round, but...
(And, yes, I'm assuming it's on a standard exhaust!)
Petrol engines always run a bit richer and idle at a slightly higher speed when cold - that's just how they work, in order to run smoothly and warm up a bit quicker.
Are you just looking at new-new cars? Hybrids have been around long enough now that they start very cheaply.0 -

I'm expecting to leave between 06:30 and 07:00. During the winter everyone has their windows closed so it's not a problem, but people leave their bedroom windows open during the summer.
It's a standard Fiesta. If I replace it, I will buy a brand-new car. I'm wondering if a new car with stop-start built in avoids the noisy starter motor, flywheel teeth and solenoid bits.0 -

I have an ecoboost Fiesta and love it (and having nil VED) but that's not why I'm posting - I like the fact that I can hear when my 'over the road' neighbour goes to work (06:30) and know I have another 20 minutes until the Spaniel comes up and licks my arm, telling me he needs to go out for a wee!#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

Just start up and drive off. Nothing to worry about.
I used to go to work on a motorbike. An old BSA M21.
One lot of neighbours complained when I was on earlies and left about 05.30.
I asked my mate across the road if it bothered him.
"No" was the reply. Never really hear you.
Anyway I just used to wheel the bike out of the garage.
Start and ride off.
Bog standard bike, but a lot louder than a modern Fiesta.0 -
EVs (and Hybrids using battery) are practially silent, road and wind noise is an issue at speed. Lot of money to spend for such an issue though, pity not everyone is so considerate.
Obviously check an EV/Hybrid makes sense for your budget and mileage etc.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -
Yeah, EV/Hybrid if you want to be setting off silently, but at 6:30am I wouldn't worry about it; most folk that work will be getting up anyway.
Just don't rev it too hard leaving the street.0 -
It might be worth having the exhaust checked. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Full marks for being very considerate, but honestly you are massively over-thinking this. Unless you have an aftermarket exhaust, a petrol Fiesta is very quiet compared to many cars. If you start it and move off straight away without lots of unnecessary revs, no one will complain. They probably won't even hear you.
It's different in winter, when people leave their cars running for 20 minutes on a fast idle to defrost, and the cars are pumping fuel-rich exhaust fumes into everyone's windows. That's worth complaining about.
(Also, there are proposals to fit all electric cars with noise generators for pedestrian safety reasons, so you might be better sticking with the petrol car in the long run.)
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
If it bothers them they will either tell you or shut their windows.0
