If you are going on an aircraft just be aware that powerbanks should be carried in your cabin baggage. They should not be packed in a case going into the hold.

If your cabin baggage is taken from you when boarding the aircraft due to lack of overhead storage space then you must remove the powerbank before handing your case over to go into the hold.

Beware of cheap rubbish from China and that part of the world. Fake goods can be hard to avoid, even from reputable suppliers. I've been happy with Anker products, but having said that, this is what happened to one I had after a good number of years...

It wasn't even charging. I just got up one morning and this is what I saw. No sign of heat, it had just quietly "exploded". Figured it was past its useful life anyway, but maybe that has something to do with why airlines don't want them in the luggage hold.
Replaced it with another Anker unit:

Had that over a year now, for backup when out and about or at home when the OH can't put her phone down and the battery is exhausted. :)

My phone is a Lg K8 2017 with a 2500mah battery. The battery will last all day on standby but it only lasts about 4 hours when on the internet so I want a backup for the 6 hour coach trip to blackpool. I don't think I will need to charge my phone more than once while I'm out but I think it's best to buy a power bank with more mah as my girlfriend can use it when I get back.

Most coaches have powerpoints, so no need for a charger. Which company are you travelling with?

Most of the units sold have fake numbers. Their maths are flawed when advertising the voltage and capacity.

    Take a 12v power pack with 3 x 4v 2Ah batteries, they say 3x4=12v correct. But they multiply the 2Ah x 3 also giving 12v 6Ah which is wrong. Its 12v 2Ah.

Then some fit substandard batteries 5 x4v 1Ah batteries and claim its 10Ah and will charge your phone 20 times. Err no its 5Ah and it wont even charge it twice unless your phone battery is tiny and under 2500Ah.

There will be losses when charging also, so having a 5Ah pack wont fully charge a 2.5Ah battery twice. Close but not quite.

I keep looking at the car starter packs, but i know they are seriously stressed when used and do i want one of those in my car on a hot day?

Buy with care. Wont they have power points at your destination?

  • Why bother, we use a travel plug and our normal chargers when in the US! Plus most hotels have USB charging points as well!

I've been considering buying a powerbank as I travel quite a lot and its not always convenient to plug into mains. iPhone SE, (husband has my old 4s and an iPad)

    Found this one

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Poweradd-20000mAh-Portable-Power-Bank-2-USB-Battery-Charger-for-Cell-Phone-UK/153432875900?hash=item23b94fe37c:g:O6YAAOSwnypcne0B

BUT although ad clearly says UK seller, the name & address are both Chinese.

SO, how do I ensure I'm not buying something dangerous?

I would be extremely cautious about buying power banks from eBay. They very seldom contain the actual advertised capacity, or just advertise a silly capacity like 100,000mAh for a tiny box which just holds one or two batteries.

Look for "EC Technology" power banks on Amazon. I was a little weary at first, as I'd never heard of the make before. But I rate it much better than the Anker or RAVPower power banks that I've had in the past and you get a little more for your money just because you're not paying for a well known brand.
