We live in one of the richest countries in the world and people should not have to make the sort of decisions you had to. I would be surprised if your father was different to me in my wish to leave what I worked for to our children rather than have the state take it.

"The state" had no involvement in our choice of his care home and the bills we received were from the care home.

If you stay in a hotel, you pay the bill; if you live at home, you pay the utilities and rent or mortgage; if you live in a care home, you pay for your stay.

No, I just think that matters such as care homes should be financed by central taxation.

So you'd be happy to pay more tax to cover other peoples care fees, as well as potentially your own?

Of course statistically you're unlikely to require a care home placement. However it ultimately comes down to if people would rather pay a smaller sum of money to ensure their care is covered or take the gamble that they won't have to pay anything but potentially have to pay a lot.

Actually I work to provide a standard of living for me not my grown up son.

If, after my days there is something left to leave anyone then bully for them. If not, tough.

And I take this view with my mum

I'm sorry but I don't understand why you insist the state is taking this off you....the state didn't pay my mortgage.

So are you willing to pay 10 or 20% tax to fund this?

The state paying for your care home costs is a "benefit" not too different from Housing Allowance etc whereby people who cannot afford appropriate housing are not left to languish on the streets. Do you really want to argure that everyone should be entitled to such benefits or that they should just go to people who need them and not "benefit scroungers"? Clearly someone who owns a house that they could never use must be able to afford care home costs.

You could argue for all ones needs to be paid for by the state (if housing, why not food, transport etc) but that is not the type of society we have.

The state paying for your care home costs could be financed by central taxation that everyone pays in the same way that the NHS is financed from central taxation why is that so wrong?

It can still be construed as deprivation of assets and challenged if there is a suspicion it was purely to hide/dispose of assets

The only thing to do is to ask our solicitor to look at it which I will do but it will take time.

So do you think that someone on minimum wage should pay higher taxes so that whoever you choose can have an inheritance?
No, I just think that matters such as care homes should be financed by central taxation.

So vote for the political party that supports that.

It will be a left wing one!
