If you are using it with Chrome I think you only have to install it on one to get it when using Chrome anywhere.

Personally I use AdBlock (see adblockplus.org) but any will do.

They won't stop all ads, just the most annoying ones.

uBlock Origin is very good and easy to install. I started using it after reading one of bowlhead's typically helpful posts:

uBlock Origin is a decent ad-blocker add-in for for Firefox or Chrome which will save you from a lot of crapola across the interwebs.

I'm often surprised when I see someone using a page I'm used to visiting and they're not using a blocker and have to navigate twice as far to find the things they want on the page.

Bad example of a site for 'quality journalism' but just as a snapshot taken a few minutes ago as an example of what you have to put up with if you go to site without using a reputable ad-blocker, vs with a blocker. In the second screenshot the blocker has blocked 108 elements which would have worsened your experience if you'd waited for them to load. If you need to cancel the blocking for any reason you can simply click the icon in your toolbar to turn it off temporarily at any time and have your own custom list of exclusions or blocks.
