Thank you. So it was working but I didnt know that because I was expecting sound from all 5 speakers. Now I understand why sound only came from two speakers. I have returned all settings as they were, turned off the hdmi control which also turns off arc.
Now I have no sound from the amp. I have checked the cables and looked at the menus for optical settings but cannot find any. I am presuming it will be the optical setting?0 -
Cable should be from optical OUT on TV to Optical IN on amp (under AV1 according to a pic of the back of your amp). Select AV1 on amp. Make sure the TV is set to output via optical if necessary. Make sure no headphones or anything are plugged in.0

Ok, how did you know that the headphones were plugged in?Now there not but still no sound from the amp. I have checked the cables again and there is only one socket on the tv and on the amp for the optical cable and these are labelled as you say.
When I select tv on the amp av1 shows on the screen briefly then it changes to its viewing setting.
I cannot find any menu for optical or tv out on the tv menu. On the tv link settings AV1 out is set to tv.
I'm not sure if this helps but
on display settings, input labels. AV1 = skip hdmi1= hdmi1. Thank you.0 -

Ha! Lucky guess, but just going through things that could stop the TV outputting! When I select tv on the amp av1 shows on the screen briefly then it changes to its viewing setting.
Good. You've got the AV1 input, labelled as TV on the amp, that makes sense. What I haven't confirmed is whether the amp is looking for optical or analogue, when you select TV. It should be optical.
Goto page 22 of the operating manaul:
https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/7/331107/RX-V377_om_UCRABGLFH_En.pdf
I think that shows how to change it. Whilst the amp is set to 'TV', press Option on the amp remote, select AV1, and make sure to select Optical for it. Press Option to exit.
P. 58 shows how to disable ARC on the amp, via the on screen menu - I think you've already done this. When ARC is set to off, you can then set the TV input to AV1 - Again I think you've already done this.
What I can't see in the manual is how to make sure AV1 uses the optical input. Maybe it does so automatically. Make sure the optical cable is clicked in properly at both ends.On the tv link settings AV1 out is set to tv.
I'm not sure if this helps but

I assume these are the TV's settings, so they don't matter for the moment...0 -
Thank you. I don't know how but I have sound! Your instructions were very good.
I might connect the cd player and may be the video/dvd although that is very old and
may be back for more instructions so you may want to go on holiday. Thank you though,I really appreciate your help.0 -
No problems, I'm so glad we got there in the end! Since you've used up your only optical digital input, you should use the Coaxial digital input on the amp, for the CD player, if the CD player has a coaxial digital output. That's ONE coax cable, but you can use an analogue cable to test it. If you don't have coax digital out on the CD player, you'll be just using the red and white phono connections.
Video/DVD. I assume it has SCART. Use that, to the TV. We can be lazy and leave it at that, without connecting the video/DVD directly to the amp.0 -
Do you really expect me to know the difference between a coax and analogue cable? I have a bag full of cables but I don't know what they are for. When it was connected last I used the red and white cable for the audio between the amp and cd player so I used that cable. I have connected the video and tv with the scart lead and it all works!
I am so happy that I can now listen to my music again and a big added bonus is that I also have 5 channel sound from the tv. (I don't know how that has happened) So everything is now working as it used to, maybe even better. I couldn't have done it without your help. Thank you so much.0 -

I'm really glad you got everything working. To reward yourself, get a nice tea or coffee, sit down and listen to your favourite CD from start to end. Ahhhhhhh!0
