I have connected a surround sound home cinema to my tv with a hdmi cable but cannot get it all to work properly. There is no sound coming through the speakers from the tv although they are working when I test them and when I select home cinema on the tv menu the tv screen goes black. It should be connected correctly because the menu for the home cinema which is a yamaha rx-377 shows on the tv screen. I'm hoping that someone can help please.

Anyone who decides to help you will need to know something about your TV.0 -
The HDMI port has to be an ARC supported one, for the soundbar that's HDMI OUT (not 1 or 2). At the TV's end that also has to be ARC enabled (ARC stands for Audio Return Channel), so make sure which port you're using.
Edit: as said, if the above doesn't solve it tell us what model of TV you've got. There may be a setting on the TV that has to be changed to external speaker setup.0 -
Thank you for your help and the links. The tv is a panasinic vierra tx-p42g10b. It has no arc on it and hdmi 1 2 and 3. It has a separate optical connection but I have never used that in the past. When it was last all connected and working we had it connected with video/dvd and a virgin media box. For now I would just like to connect the tv if possible, but maybe not.0

See pages 66 & 67 of the TV's manual:

Good stuf, I think we can get it working. Plug in the HDMI OUT of the amp, to an HDMI IN on the TV.
Now, plug in any other HDMI devices (Virgin box, Blu-Ray, whatever) into the HDMI IN sockets on the amp. They should now all do sound through the amp, which will then pass the picture on to the TV.
Now for the TV sound. As above, since you don't have ARC, you need to get the sound from the TV, back down into the amp. You mention that your TV has an Optical out, and I can see from Everywhere's link that the amp has an Optical In, under AV1. Plug an optical cable in to those two, and you should get your TV sound on AV1.
That's the physical stuff, you may also need to play with some menus on individual devices.0 -
Thank you for all of the help.I have had a look at the manuals and still no luck. I dont know how I did it but now when I switch off the amp the picture appears on the tv and if I switch off the tv the amp turns off. I have a grey shaded hdmi connection on the tv and on the amp I have used hdmi out for the connections. Any more help would be appreciated please.0

I have only connected the tv to the amp. I thought it easier to get it working before connecting the dvd player. I have connected the hdmi cable to the hdmi1 on the tv.
On the amp I have connected the other end of the cable to hdmi out. I went to the menu on the amp,( that has always shown on the tv ) and looked at the configurations. I also followed a section in the manual that configures the amp and tv so they work. I cant seem to change anything on the tv menu when the amp is on.0 -
So, HDMI OUT on the amp, connected to HDMI 1 on the TV, and when you turn the TV off, the amp turns off too. And you don't want this to happen? I think it might be HDMI CEC, branded different ways by different manufacturers. Viera Link on Panasonics for example. Can you find that setting on your TV and turn it off, and see if that fixes it or come back with anything further?
HDMI CEC is similar to SCART control - devices talking to each other and sending basic functions down the cable between them.0 -
Thank you.I haven't got as far as fixing the switching off together but it is something I dont want it to do.
What I am trying to do for now is connect the tv and amp so that I can hear sound and see a picture. Unfortunately for me its not happening easily because I dont seem to understand the connection basics and the more I read the manuals and look at the pictures of the back of the amp and tv the more confused I am.0
