Viera Link OFF will stop TV controlling the amp by switching it on/off (and the amp switching on/off the TV).

To get pictures and sound you'll need to connect your other boxes to the amp's hdmi inputs and select the correct input on the amp to get the sound/pictures. That you see the menu means the hdmi out from amp to hdmi in on TV is connected correctly. Some connected devices may (via hdmi consumer electronics control, CEC) auto-select the correct amp input when powered on from standby.

Only if you use the Freeview and/or freesat TV tuners in the TV and want to send sound to the AVR will you need the optical cable between the TV and amp.

You will need to mute or reduce the TV speakers whenever you are using the amp as this can't be done automatically when Viera Link is off.

Thank you rodders53, some of that makes sense to me. I watch tv through the freeview on the tv and the last time it was all working was when it was connected via a virgin media box and I never used the optical cable. I will get one as soon as I can. Are there different optical cables, do I need a certain one and do I still need to use the hdmi cable that is connected between the tv and the amp?

As Rodders says, switch Viera Link OFF. HDMI is the best connection, forget about SCART.

If you want to watch and hear the Virgin box, that's Virgin-HDMI-Amp-HDMI-TV. You should get the sound from the amp, and the picture from, well, the TV.
Same applies to any device you connect to an HDMI INPUT on the amp.
The complication comes when you want to hear the TV's own Freeview tuner, though the amp. The TV doesn't have an OUTPUT to the amp. If you had ARC, the sound would be fed back down the HDMI lead, going 'backwards' down the cable! Since we don't have that option, use the Optical OUTPUT on the TV, to an optical INPUT on the amp. They're all much of a muchness, some are better built. Just buy one that's the right length really.

Thank you almillar for the explanation. I have finally got the optical cable and connected it to the amp and tv. I have left the hdmi cable where I had it originally. The tv now returns to normal sound and picture when I turn the amp off but when I turn the amp on the tv picture goes and I have a blank screen and no sound.
I dont have virgin media so the set up is for the tv and amp.

OK sorry, so it's just a TV and amp. Let's keep it simple then, remove the HDMI cable. Does that work? What is the Optical input labelled as on the amp?
If that's the extent of your setup, and it works, you can leave it at that. Otherwise, put the HDMI lead back in (HDMI OUT on amp, and HDMI 1 on the TV, unless you know better) and see what happens.
When you want to listen to the TV through the amp, you should select whatever the optical input on the amp is labelled as.

Thank you so much. I have managed to get part working this morning.
Yesterday's set up. Amp hdmi cable in arc socket and optical cable in optical cable. On tv hdmi lead from arc on amp to hdmi1. Optical cable from amp to optical socket on tv.
Result. No picture, no sound but access on tv to amp menu from amp remote.
This morning I moved the hdmi lead from arc on the amp (no arc on tv as far as I know) to hdmi1 and left the tv end as hdmi1.
Result. Picture and sound on tv but no on screen menu from the amp remote, so I am unable to make adjustments. Two of the 5 speakers are working now but all speakers worked when tested on the first set up.
This afternoon as you suggested I removed the hdmi lead but there was no sound or picture.
The hdmi1 (arc) on the amp is bd/dvd I cant see any marked tv.The other sockets are hdmi2, hdmi3 and hdmi4.
Optical on the amp is tv/av1
Optical on the tv is digital audio out.
Its all a lot confusing to me but I'm sure I will get there with help. Thank you.

OK, you do need the HDMI because you want to see the amp's settings on the TV.
Connect HDMI OUT on the amp (this is the only one that will work) to HDMI1 on the TV. Everything on the amp, should be displayed on the TV, on HDMI 1 now. Can you see the amp's menus on the TV again? If not, do try the other HDMI ports on the TV, and select them on the TV remote. I don't care which one you use, as long as it works!

Does your amp have assignable inputs? If so, assign the optical input to 'TV' if possible.

Let's keep it at that for the moment. You should be able to watch TV, select 'TV' on the amp, and listen to the TV through the amp. Does that work?

Speakers. If your amp has a test function, use it, and see if you're getting sound from each speaker (plus subwoofer if applicable). Not every sound source will have 5.1 sound, many, many will only be stereo. If the amp just plays it straight, you'll only have sound from front left and right. Most amps have umpteen features for different effects to emulate surround sound. This takes the 2 channels of sound the amp receives, and puts some of it to the other speakers. I like to keep mine on ProLogic 2 Movie for most stuff, and change to ProLogic 2 Music for, well, music. If you want proper 5 channel sound, some TV channels broadcast some programmes in 5.1. Most DVDs will be in 5.1 too.
TVs very often only give out 2 channel sound so you might never get proper surround from it. I get mine via a set top box (Sky box, YouView box) but some TVs are very restricted in this regard.

Thank you for your help and patience. The set up is now arc on the amp and hdmi1 on the tv. I tried the other hdmi sockets as suggested. I can still get the picture and sound but not the amp menu or get a blank screen without sound but see the amp menu. I still cant see the menu with a picture and sound. I cant see any reference to optical so I'm not sure where or if I can change this.
On the tv when turned on it is set to ec/hdmi1 576p input but I cant see how to change this on the menu.
I have checked the amp menu settings and they are:
    Hdmi control "on"
    Tv audio input "audio"
(Can be set to av1 to 5
    Arc "on"
    Input hdmi1 "tv"
    Input hdmi2 "cd"
    Av1 "tv"
    Av2 "cd"
    Video out "av1"
I had already tested the speakers and they all work fine but I didnt know that I would only receive sound from two speakers. Thank you for explaining. I understand why I am only hearing sound from two speakers now. So that bits working fine.

Hold on there. Are you expecting to see the amp menu, on top of the TV picture? You're not going to get that. The TV will show you EITHER the picture from its internal Freeview tuner OR the picture being fed to it by the amp. That could be the amp's menu, or a BD player, Sky box, Playstation, or whatever you've connected to it.

Also, turn HDMI control OFF, to simplify things. This sounds like HDMI CEC to me, as discussed earlier in the thread. Turn ARC OFF as well. Not all of your devices are capable of it, so we'll not bother with it.

    You say:
    Tv audio input "audio"

What are the other options for this setting? If there's an 'optical' option, select that.

    And again
    Video out "av1"

What are the other options here? I'd want to select HDMI if available.

Yep, 2 channels in, but the amp can 'fake it' with the different fancy modes.
