Stubod said:...seeing as how I am stuck indoors these days I have spent some time "shuffling money" around due to the recent crop of rate reductions. I have now closed 4 Santanders and a Coventry (which we have had for years), and gone with Club Lloyds + both of their regular monthly savers. Feels very much like fighting over scraps these days but needs must. We stopped our monthly S&S ISA drawdowns until the market (hopefully) shows some signs of recovery, we have decided to live of savings for a while instead so every little helps. It would be nice to have just one account that paid a "reasonable" rate of interest but I guess there are more important things to worry about at the moment!2 years into retirement we had planned on starting to do a bit more traveling this year including a cruise, but this is not going to happen for the foreseeable future!Does make me wonder what people will do regarding holidays for the next year or two? Can't see cruising or flying regaining their popularity until a vaccine is in place and not sure if there will be many/any cruise ships or airlines left by then! I think there will be a boom in holidaying in the UK either in self catering or motor homes / caravans. Although to counter this there may be a corresponding drop in overseas visitors?
The problem will be availability of airlines, hotels and countries who want visitors, well we can all live in hope.

As I've commented on other threads.
Travel insurance, and the availability of, will be a huge deciding factor for many, if Covid19 is specifically excluded, going forwards. Not just cancellation, but health/medical too.
I too think worldwide travel will be a no-no for a long time, unfortunately.
Flying was becoming a PITA before. More restrictions could put many off. Not to mention increased costs.
Life AC will be very different from life BC. Some would argue better in many environmental ways!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)3 -
I think previous experience indicates that after a major problem we revert back to where we were beforehand. I think air travel will probably restart with fantastic bargains and before you know it everyone will be clamouring for the best deals. Michael O'Leary never seems to bother about the repuation of Ryanair. As long as it's cheap people will just keep buying tickets.1

You might be right there Fred. I suppose the big question is how long it takes to get back to that point?
1 year, 2 years, 5 years...10??
Is someone who's happy to travel cheap, ASAP, also happy to possibly travel uninsured. Probably, as they did BC...then had to turn to gofundme, when it all went wrong! How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)2 -
..I also think that despite some peoples view that "things will never be the same again", human nature tells me that things always revert back to "normal" when this is over, it's just a question of how soon this will be?Although if you want to get really depressed you can start watching "Dr. John's" daily you tube vids. (..he has been right so far, and seems to know his stuff...)For us although we are desperate to get out and about I don't think we will be doing any trips abroad for at least 2 years, or until vaccinated..would be interested to here what other peoples travel plans are in the short term?.."It's everybody's fault but mine...."0

Short term I'd just like to be able to book some self catering accommodation near the sea for 4 nights.
Before that, I'd just like to be able to take a day trip, with a picnic somewhere.
Simple needs. The Canary Islands can wait. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)4 -
Short term I'd like to be getting out in the camper van again. We don't really mix with others when we do this anyway unless we are near a nice pub or restaurant. If we have the dogs with us (haven't tried this yet but I don't know if the kennels will make it through this difficult time) that automatically creates social distancing from other dog walkers as ours don't like other dogs. As a result we would normally go to very quiet places anyway.
Longer term I hope to travel abroad again but, again, the places that appeal are quiet, remote and outdoorsy. Our Kenyan safari at the end of July has not yet been cancelled although I am sure that it will be - I had to pay the balance or forfeit the deposit so Virgin Holidays are now holding a significant amount of my credit card provider's funds. They are being really slow with refunds even for the people who were cancelled in March/April so we will just have to sit tight.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Very short term - I'll be relieved when refund for our cancelled cruise 29th March - 17th April arrives
Short term - I'm reluctant to cancel our only booked holiday, another cruise scheduled for 6th November, but know its virtually inevitable.
Longer term - I desperately want to book flights to Hong Kong to visit my son. Face Time is great when you know you can visit in the foreseeable future. Not really good enough when you've no idea when that might be1 -
Another thought re UK trips, once allowed, is that I hope councils etc will open public toilets, especially if pubs remain closed. I'm assuming they're closed currently (are they??)
No use being able to take a picnic somewhere for the day, if no other facilities are available!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
At this immediate point in time I'm actually grateful for the 90+ mile commute to work!
Short term awaiting refund on my 0% credit card for my holiday with youngest son to Croatia and am looking forward to being able to resume days out to visit places on interest.
Medium term would like to book a holiday let in the UK so Mrs CRV and I can have a holiday together.
Long term- looking forward to going abroad- fortunately I had paid for Mrs CRV to travel to Tenerife to see her Dad in February, so at least she has seen him this year once rather than her usual 2/3 time travel to see him and his once travel to see us.CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!1
