MP3 tag has no album art so again not suitable for managing albums

mp3tag is intended for tagging your files, so you need to find the art that you want to put on the album or tracks. It's not a library stocked with art that you can pick from.

It's not going to assume what you want. Some folks may want a front cover, others may prefer a shot of the label. For a box set, some will want the box cover, others will want individual sleeve art for individual discs.

    You need to choose.

Itunes has nice layout but no way to update meta tags, maybe works fine with brand new tagless rips

    Nonsense.

Pick the music you want to tag, and right-click on it.

From the pop-up menu that results, select Get Info and you can edit the tags to your heart's content.

Tried music brainz and I don't even recognise my cd collection. Just a huge list of 8000 MP3s so no good at all for my needs. Maybe ok for individual mp3s

When you browse your collection on your PC, what folder structure is it in? Do you have folders for artists, then sub-folders for albums?

If not, what do you have?

Chris, could you outline from start to finish what your actual requirements are here?

We started with you ripping new CDs, and I thought you wanted to know how to tag them. Now you seem to want to update the tags on an existing collection, and you seem to be taking issue also with the style of various players, not tagging software.

What. are. you. trying. to. do?

Please outline it in a paragraph of a few sentences, not as a one-liner. We're trying to help. We need more details from you.

To be honest I'm not entirely sure anymore what Chris wants because everything that's been suggested either doesn't work, doesn't do what he wants or isn't pretty enough.

The link I posted in my first post on this thread suggests Windows Media Player has not discontinued the metadata for Media Player in Windows 10, the change only affected the Media Center for all versions of Windows and the Media Player in Windows 7.

If the metadata is not populating on Chris's configuration but works on everybody else's then that implies they have an issue with their setup. Its not entirely clear where Chris is Windows wise, in one post he "upgraded" to Windows 8 and then suddenly decided he had Windows 10.

So I can only presume Chris wants something to fix whatever issue he has with Media Player that nobody else seems to have and he won't elaborate on. Unfortunately psychic powers are a bit below par today in the Techie Stuff wing so we'll get Derek Acorah in and be back to normal service soon ;)

    Chris, here's how you updata metadata in iTunes, as I said above;

Right-click on music to get pop-up menu

Click Get Info to access and change

I tried the freebie version of dbpoweramp couldn't find automatic metadata on it anywhere didn't like the interface it was rubbish to tiny more of a music player than a music manager

The CD Ripper will connect to five different metadata libraries - click on the green icon at the top of the screen. dBpoweramp is made up of a ripper and conversion utility - make sure you are using the right component.
  • The best tag editor in my opinion, that I've been using for ~10 years or so now, is TagScanner. Incredibly flexible, incredibly powerful, and supports far more extensive tags than iTunes will ever support (e.g. ID3v2).
