Am I just not getting this reference? I really can't understand it or the relevance to this discussion. I'm sorry for bringing it up as obviously no one else has...
I was going to leave it too ...but I think it's his way of just reminding us that he believes he is on a "higher level" (his posts convey this a lot).

My friend does work for "the 7th richest man in the world" (actually it varies, last yr 5th, yr before 13th I think).......and his secretary is always querying invoices and checking on expenses filed.0 -

There's no reason why he couldn't be. I'm on a higher level, and there's no reason why he couldn't be upstairs in his house as well..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

When I was a teenager living with my parents, I'd do ridiculous clothes shopping, such as go to Debenhams & buy the same top in 4 different colours, or go to Dolcis & but 3 pairs of shoes in exactly the same style just different colours. I've since learned the hard way to spend wisely & budget. Despite having been through my own personal debt hell years later, I went to the market on Saturday & got 6 jumpers, but this time they were only £2.50 each & were different designs, & they were a necessary expense because I've lost 4 stones :j & everything's hanging off me so badly I look like I've been dressed in the rain.
Even if I won a huge amount on the lottery, I can't imagine myself doing the ridiculous shopping on of my friends does - the family are rolling in money, & recently she bought several handbags from Harrods costing over £500 each. To me, it's a bag that will have my usual rubbish in it (including at least one pen that will leak ), & I can't see any need to spend that kind of money on a bag, just as I don't get spending over £15 on a lipstick when I can get a perfectly good one from the market for 80p. She has weekly massages, more manicures than I've had hot dinners, has a cab bill of at least £700pm, yet I don't think she has as good an understanding of money as I do. She won't shop at Lidl, yet can't tell the difference when she eats what I've bought there. Even if I had loads of money, I'd still shop there, & also Primark & Poundland too - cheap in price doesn't have to mean cheap in quality. If she & I end up broke on the same day, she'll feel it far more than I will because she's got a greater height to fall from.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

I think wealthy bosses who brag or are insensitive about money in front of staff living on or near the poverty line should be lined up and shot.
It's their crap wages that mean people are poor.0 -
Thanks for everyone's comments, didn't expect such a lot of responses from my pondering.
He is genuinely a really nice guy, but yes, completely with his head in the clouds! Some of the things I see him spending money on, blimey.
I don't care that he has more money than me, he's a lot older and has worked damn hard for his money, I can appreciate that.
It was just the fact that it was such a throwaway remark about "Oh dear, so and so has to budget.. aren't times hard?" But this guy he's talking about is probably not able to afford his £10,000 holiday this year or something, which is a bit different to my situation where I do actually have to properly budget for things... like food!
It's like he sees it as "Them and Us." Them being the poor little people who are there to service the needs of the Us rich people.
What makes it worse is that he keeps "bragging" "Not bad for a lad from the East End (of London)." He actually thinks he still in touch with the little people, but he is so not. I could think of examples, but it would probably identify him, so best not!
Oh well, not sure why I'm complaining, or even if I am really. I got my nice little house with my bf, annoying (but loveable... sometimes) lodgers, my family and my pets and he's got nobody (except his mwah mwah mates off the telly... but that's another story). Plus I'm trying for a baby, so will be even more broke, but I won't be working for him, and I will be all happy being a fantastic housewife for a while!Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

He probably doesn't know any better than to say something like that as he's probably never had to go without. I feel quite sorry for people like that really as they'll never know the excitement of saving up for something .... Well I quite like saving up for things0

yeah, I think the confusing post was about the fish singers v tuna steaks thing
and OP, I think your boss is a fool. Insensitive at best and harrassing at worst - how condescending is that comment about the theatre tickets? I would disagree with all those saying he obviously has no idea about poverty - I think he's acutely aware of the disparity between what he earns and what others earn, otherwise he wouldn't be making these unpleasant comments.Gala bingo wins £70!!! mystery shopping earnings: £0
