Good on you!!!
I think if I was a millionnaire I would still have to budget. Maybe not be on a budget, but would still want to know where all my money was going, would like to give some to charity and so on. I think sometimes the proprtions are the same, these people just have bigger mortgages, cars and more expensive taste in restaurants. they still spend the same percentage of their money on clothes for example, just buy dearer ones, spend more money heating their mansions and more fuel for their fancy cars.0 -
After paying off my car loan, I put the equivalent of my monthly payments into a high interest account for when I need to replace it. I mentioned this to a colleague and she said "Oh, but your car is still quite new, isn't it?" Yes, but at least I'll be able to put a decent deposit down/pay for the whole thing rather than having to RELY on getting a loan for the full amount.

My bosses have a combined basic income of 800,000 pa - they own 3 holiday cottages in this country and 1 in Spain - and have a HUGE share portfolio - and my boss still says she cant afford things! I think everyone has a very different definition of being skint. Their version is 'but I've ear marked that money for a yacht!' whereas ours is 'if I buy that I cant eat'!!!!!!!!!______________________________________Contacted CCCS: October 07 - £23,120Debt Free: 2014 :mad:0

Whilst I agree with your point, it was an ill-judged comment for your boss to make, I just wanted to say something quickly.
Not every solicitor, or person working in the law, have loads. Yes many do, but there are lots and lots of people who do struggle.
I am not trying to say that the law is an industry which lacks money as a whole, there are many legal professionals who do very well indeed. I'm not making excuses for your boss or trying to undermine your point; it is just that many people say things without really thinking. Don't let it fek you off.I'm the only gay in this forum

This is exactly right painted lady, I am no millionaire but I am earning more than double than I did last year, have no more debts and have sold my flat so I no longer have a mortgage. I live with my OH who earns well into 6 figures.
BUT, I still have to budget or I would be right back at square one.
Admittedly my budget isn't as tight as it was before, it provides for a lot more luxuries but I do not let myself go over that self imposed limit.
I found being DF very strange, at first I remained just as obsessed about money, still kept the spending diary religiously, berated myself for spending unnecessarily. But slowly I have started to let go and spend again, but I need to keep the checks in place to stop it spiralling out of control again, for example, I found myself actually considering spending £600 on a handbag
My OH has only just started to budget, he is in awe of my spreadsheets and the fact I can tell him to the penny how much we spent at the supermarket last month. He honestly had no idea how much he spent and often used to get double red demands for his electricity bill and regularly got charged for failing to pay his credit card on time. So far I have saved him over £500 by switching suppliers and finding cheaper insurances. Just because he can afford to spend more doesn't mean he should do.Saving for an early retirement!0 -
I earn up to 5 x more than I did 10 years ago, yet back then I told myself if I could just get to a little more I would be content, wrong!!!!!!!
Every time I've got up a notch my spending does to.
Also you start to worry about different things, in my case I'm obsessed with saving enough for retirement which is years away. Sounds strange to some I expect, but once you achieve a certain level you then have massive pressure to maintain it and that includes when you retire.
Also being a saver adds pressure as you have to forgoe things now. Why is it I cant afford a flash car yet people I know on 4 x less income can?0 -
Thanks for everyone's comments. I wouldn't say it annoyed me so much, maybe what popped out of my mouth was a subtle hint for a payrise, teehee.
Thinking about it, he has said things like that before. He is always going to the theatre, seems to be his thing, and when I mentioned that I was thinking of going, he came out with, "Gosh, look at the price of the tickets. People in low paid jobs must spend all year saving for them." I was like, "What?!!"
Just don't think he's got any concept of money whatsoever. He knows my wages, knows my mortgage (he did the conveyancing (for free, I should add, so he's not all bad)), so he must think I'm a pauper!Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

There is not a more satisfying feeling than getting to the end of the week with a spare couple of quid to spend on a bottle of wine.
I really enjoy my wine when this happens...I am safe in the knowledge I have stuck to my budget with a bit to spare and I am justifiably treating myself.
I don't think I would like to live without that great feeling of satisfaction and calm. xxxHappy and thankful with never enough time to do everything:rotfl:0 -

I had read through your thread and thought your boss had just made an insensitive and thoughtless remark. However, in your last post you have indicated this kind of comment is not out of the ordinary. This can become bullying through belittling the lifestyle/achivements of others. This may not be his intention at all (he may just want to boast/impress you) but if he is gratuitously making negative remarks about the earning capacity of his staff (or people in similar roles) he needs to know that it is unacceptable.
If you can try to resolve it with humour, just don't carry on putting up with it. If you do not think you can make a witty response then try the following:
Either
Ask him to meet with you and- tell him what you enjoy about your job
- tell him there is one thing which you are upset/offended/disappointed by
- Explain to him how it makes you feel about the comments he makes concerning the earnings and buying power of people who are in a lower salary bracket than him.
The next time he does it say "OUCH" " that hurt it sounds too much like my life/circumstances to me"
It is his responsibility to behave well.
Good luck
