I could get one page beyond the "continue and start" without any problems - but I couldn't go further without duplicating my application of two weeks past, so I abandoned.

How far are you getting into the process before it stalls ?

I filled-in my details, and got to the part when they first do a credit check on you, but that's when it says there are technical problems.

Have just thought of something - maybe I should try a different browser.

Eureka! Chrome was causing the problem, no probs with IE though.

Unfortunately, I have been turned-down for an Advance account with them - after all that! :(

How long do you need the money in and account open before switching again :)

In which case, I would go into the branch and interact with a real person.

I was knocked back first time I applied - no problem second attempt.

I have managed to book an appointment with my nearest HSBC for this coming Saturday morning, so will go armed with documentation to prove I can meet the min pay-in, even without a £1750 salary- so wish me luck!

Your comment gives me hope, and I'll report back on my appointment Saturday PM :D
  • Good luck.

There is no need for a £1750 salary - as long as you can service that amount monthly from overall income sources, mine is from 4 different pensions.

If asked, tell them this will be your main current account, even if that's being economical with the truth, they have no way of knowing otherwise.

Unfortunately not. The person I saw in-branch today said once your application has been through the system, they are unable to do anything with it. The standard account paying £75 is the only one I can go for.

It's a bit odd though, because by the time I had got home the post had arrived, with a letter from HSBC issuing me with a PIN. I am guessing this is from my so-called failed application from the beginning of the week, (no card has arrived yet though).

So I am a bit perplexed as to what is exactly going on.

    HSBC don’t know they’re a**rse from they’re elbow.
I was originally rejected online but went in branch and system was over ridden. Advisor asked me couple of questions about income, not salary, and home owner status, she resubmitted application and it was successful.
I went on to complain about the whole fiasco, waste of time, petrol to get to branch and got an extra £50...soooo £175+£50 for switching!
