I don’t know what kind of case is on it but, once it’s repaired, I’d highly recommend Griffin Survivor. We have them on all the iPads at school and they’ve all survived more than 5 years of abuse from 4-11 year olds unscathed.

Thanks for the brand - I’ll try that one.

    Really?
    How much is it worth?
A new one is another £300

    £300 less £160 .
New once will cost you £140 more than the repair that may not last and whatever you get back from sale of broken one .

Well your about to spend £160 his father spent (lets call it £100) and its a knocking bet it will get broken again £100.....so that £300 ipad has cost about £660....thats about 7 or 8 kindles with decent cases.

But hey ho its your money and you seem happy splashing it about on an 8 yr old who possibly doesn't appreciate the value of things yet

Apple are replacing it for £219.
Probably better than spending £160 on an already devalued iPad.

    So its cost you £300 + £100 + £219=£619

Buy a decent cover and tell 8 yr old how many weeks pocket money its cost to replace/repair

I’ve bought a new one (well two actually - got the new 6th gen , one for the granddaughter too - but I’ll be getting 2 inch thick foam cases and gluing them on!

What’s the best way to retrieve some money on the old one?
Ebay or one of those CEX type places?
Ebay always feels a bit dodgy for scams?
    Any other avenues?

Why do people think that they can sell electronic things for spares, who is going to spend time taking it to bits.

Buy a Kindle HD much better value,or is it about brand image again.

You can get prices online from CEX etc then search ebay sold prices to see a likely price. Don't forget to allow for Ebay and paypal fees as well as postage.

There are scammers on Ebay, but I suspect they are more interested in fully working products than buying broken items for spares.
