iPad repair

I bought my grandson an iPad last July for his birthday & a nice case.
The case was quickly destroyed (the front cover came off) & the screen was cracked.
I didn’t rush to repair it, I was a bit annoyed such an expensive gift wasn’t treated with more care. Like get a new case.
Anyway his father took it to one of those repair places and had the screen replaced, so now I can’t take it back to apple for repairs.
He was at mine last weekend & we had his iPad in a bag & when we took it out he was complaining the screen was cracked. It was so dirty with fingerprints I couldn’t see the screen properly (plus I’ve got any unhappy child kicking off and I’d just returned from a stressful shopping trip. I wiped it with the dishcloth to see the screen.
It was cracked. He plugged it in to charge and though it was on, it was unresponsive - frozen. My grandson was annoyed that I’d broken it wiping the screen.
My daughter says she’s taken it somewhere and it’s £160 to repair & it’s water damage.
Does the £160 sound about right or should I get more quotes?

Water damage is going to require replacement parts inside the iPad, presumably a replacement board depending on what's gone inside, plus the cost of the screen.
Unfortunately if you give children expensive presents like iPads and what not, don't expect the children to look after them. Screens on phones, tablets and what not are fairly hardy but not if you repeatedly stab them with ever increasing force.
I know its easy to be wise after the event but a cheap tablet could have been a better solution so if it fell in the bath it would have still died but wouldn't have been as bad as the cost of the iPad.0 -

He’s had cheaper tablets in the past, but never got on with them. Short batter life, etc. iPads are so user friendly. He’s nearly 8, btw, not a toddler.0 -
I’m not moaning about the fact I bought it, I’ve just explained what happened in order to get an idea of repair costs.
Do I pay the £160 or does it sound over the top.0 -

It’s nigh on impossible for you to have caused water damage by wiping the cracked screen, there are multiple layers to the screen and while liquid might have got under the cracked touchscreen it wouldn’t get through the LCD or metal back layer to contaminate the actual workings (unless you dunked the iPad in the basin first).====0 -

That’s what I thought, maybe it’s frozen from a bump while it was in the bag.0 -
When my granddaughter was 8, I bought her a 10" cheapo tablet, cheap because she was 8. When she broke it, I gave her a Hudl that I had put together from 2 broken ones that I got for free. It is still working, I have it back. In 2017 she was 12 and her IT specialist big brother put together a top end gaming desktop, from new and expensive parts, bought by the whole family for Christmas. 2018 Christmas and we all bought her a top end (not Apple) phone. She did not need a tablet.
My point? She was like every 8 year old at that age: took it all for granted. We would no more have bought her an iPhone, than a car: she was not capable of using and caring for it. By 12 she was much more mature and capable of being trusted to treat her expensive possessions with care and respect. At almost 14, she has matured into a self-confident young lady who is horrified to recall breaking that tablet.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I’m asking about a repair quote, not a lecture on how much I spend on my grandsons birthday present.0 -

I don’t recall asking for advice on how much I should spend on my grandsons present.0
