I have a crossover lead to link two of my computers.
How is it supposed to work?
I have plugged it into the network socket of both computers and gone to this pc on both but neither see each other?

Most recent network interface cards don't need crossover cables because they will auto-detect. Unless these are old machines (pre-Gigabit Ethernet) it might be worth trying a standard cable instead. Another common and frustrating problem can be firewalls running on either or both machines which will prevent communication. Try with the firewalls on both temporarily turned off.0

You simply need to configure a static IP address on each machine within the same subnet.

There is no security key, you will not be using a wireless connection, you will be connecting via the Ethernet cable which is what you originally asked.
Follow steps 1 to 4 in the link provided.

As as been said, configure both computer's ethernet connection with a (different) static IP address within the same subnet range.0 -
