A not insignificant sum which would have made the error even more obvious. I don't believe you didn't notice it at the time.

What you believe and what happened are 2 different things, you don't know me, I wasn't checking the prices as I picked up items. The shop was extremely busy, hence I check my receipt when I get home.

As above, the legal side perhaps isn't all that relevant if it's somewhere you regularly shop. They don't have to do business with you in the future.

Surely you were aware that you had had more than 50% discount. Your bill was 25% less than it should have been.

Why would the OP surely be aware, when their own staff member wasn't?

OP, as a business....they would've been required to carry out due diligence & cannot simply unwind the contract if they're not making as much profit as they thought/making a loss.

One of the few things that can void a contract is a unilateral mistake - where one party makes a mistake and the other is aware of that mistake (or should have been aware it was a mistake). This is used when say a £800 tv is sold for £80 by mistake. However if the circumstances were that other items were being sold for a similar discount/price, then its less likely to be considered an obvious error.

Yes it does. And certain parts of it still apply to consumer sales.

  • Are we saying the OP bought items normally selling for £2000, but the till automatically reduced this by 50% to £1000, and then the assistant mistakenly knocked off another 50% to £500?

Personally, if I were buying stuff at 50% off I'd keep a running total in my head, and check the receipt while I'm still in the "boutique".

That's how I read it. I can't speak for everyone, but I think I'd be noticing an error like that.

I would notice that error but I can see how the OP didn't. Personally, I'd just return it all for a full refund. Couldn't look at it if it left a bad taste in the mouth.
