Am i being unreasonable?

I want to merge our joint incomes into one account i dont feel this is unreasonable my other half does.

This has become more of a problem recently as her salary has increased and i have changed career and mine has decreased. She now had many years experience and is doing well along with a bonus every year.

We used to earn around 30k each a year before tax. Now i am on just over £22k and she is getting close to £40k

Everything used to be affordable and things were always half each when paid for.

Now we have always had separate accounts then paid a set amount into a joint account for house bills but i suppose what i am saying is i want to reverse this.

I want our money to go into one account and we both then take form there. i was thinking perhaps to make it fair we said 10% spending money each before it goes int the account so she would have more anyway.

We need to do something different as she is always asking me for half and i find it hard to stump up half all the time.

A lot of people like the independence of keeping separate accounts. I think it's fine to do that.

I don't think it's fair that you are paying a higher % of your income towards the bills though.

hi, no children at the moment. may have them in the next year or so if we went through IVF but that it yet to be decided or if we were to do it no certainty it would work.

I just feel that there are things we both waste money on and i really want to focus on projects such as paying down the mortgage and doing refurb projects on the house

You should split the bills, if you earned more than her would she expect you to do the same?

how do you mean split the bills - we pay all the household bills half and half. and everything else is half and half. She pays for a holiday which is a big expense and paid for house projects last year which were a big expense.

    Are you married?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)

On the info you have provided so far :- if there are no kids, are you, yourself, are fit and healthy - then yes, I do think you are being unreasonable

Especially considering you were seemingly content with the current bank situation, until your salary went down. You are wanting to change the rules according to your own personal situation

You will get very varied responses to this though

You can control what you feel you may be wasting money on though, if you looked at your expenditure
