It looks like the connection is 2Mb, but your actually getting 650kbps - remember it is up to 8Mb

when did you first get broadband switched on? If recently, then give it 10 days after you connected to it, as it needs to be trained to your line. Also, go to http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php enter in your phone number, then on the results page, select 'BT ADSL' from the menu - then something should be mentioned about how fast you should possibly get

[EDIT] When doing the checker, also remember to close anything else that can use the connection, like email, MSN, Skype, P2P, iPlayer, and so on . . . .

Try using this speed tester which will give your measured speed in Mb/s.

  • Most important details here are your IP Profile and downstream connection rate.
IP profile for your line is - 750 kbps determinesthe fastest speed you might record is 0.75 Mbs.
Your IP Profile is determined by the speed at which your modem/router negotiates with your exchange (sync rate/downstream connection rate) when you reboot or turn on.
To get a profile of 750 kbps you have to sync between 864-1120 kbps.
In your case the DSL connection rate (sync rate) is 1920 kbps(DOWN-STREAM) which if you maintain for up to 5 days will give a profile of 1500 kbps - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm- but as you notice you have dropped sync speed in the recent past hence very low profile. Fastest downloads with a 1500 kbps profile would be upto 1.5 Mbps.
Your line stats - downstream attenuation, sync rate, snr margin - http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php will give an idea of the condition of your line.
Check your filters and wiring http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html and take your line stats again using the test socket behind the master face plate if you have one. Any improvement in sync rate, decrease in attenuation or increase in snr margin means your wiring is suspect.
For troubleshooting speed problems the bt speedtest is the only one ISPs (may) take heed of but if your downstream attenuation is around say 56 - 63 db then its distance from exchange being your problem.

Thanks Mr J. This is what I get, I guess about 2 MB is the norm for me. The reason I am asking is that some providers charge more for up to 8MB, no point me paying if i cannot get the speed.

    BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Aylesbury telephone exchange.

lg_green.gifADSL is available in your arealg_green.gifYour exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 3Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

    Standard ADSL RAG results:
lg_red.gifYou cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL lg_orange.gifYou may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL lg_green.gifYou can receive 512Kbps ADSL lg_green.gifYou can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are not actually getting 2MB. Try the speed tester in post #4 and copy your result here.

3Mb is what you should expect to receive, not what you are actually receiving. Your first post suggests you are getting 650kbps.

Try the speed ester in post #4, and post back your results. Try doing a test at 3 different times of day... morning... afternoon... and evening if you can.
  • The OP will never get faster than 750kbps until his profile improves. His profile will improve if his modem maintains a higher sync rate with the exchange. Sync rate with the exchange depends on quality/length of line, internal wiring, filters and background noise.
No point in doing speed tests until profile increases.
The line checkers are purely indicative, not definite - mine reports only capable of 2 Mbps but in reality I get 4 Mbps.
If OP posts line stats, attenuation, snr margin and sync rate it will give an indication of what his line can support.

This is what I get, do not understand what it means? Thanks

our link from us appears to be about 0.760352Mb/s For a fast ADSL internet link, look at http://sod.ms/
A non AAISP speed tester is: www.speedtest.net, this also seems good for testing upload.
