  • the extra program you need to make the aldi navigator to show speed cams is not free. it cost 29 euros but totally worth it!
This site has a free 'safety camera' database for free download, don't know how good it is tho!
    http://www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php

Remember they are safety blackspots so its best for us to know where they are so we can reduce speed / be more cautious and reduce accidents.

I agree, just a pity that the copper who was caught doing 153mph didn't think so!!??**!! And he got let off cause it was 'good conditions and late at night', wot a joke!! That judge should have been lynched.

the database is free - but the program you need to run it isnt. also the database needs to be converted to the right format which i have so cleverly done! 8)

Certainly not, I'd probably be flamed with a TORRENT of abuse if I did. ;-)

I have been trying all week at my local aldi stores to try and get the sat nav, but with no luck. I know its a bit of a long shot but does anyone know any aldi in birmingham or surrounding areas that still have any.

    Thanx
  • Hi

I have a spare one which is still sealed in box. If you are interested in purchasing it just contact me through e-mail via money saving expert
Named after my cat, picture coming shortly
  • Iv just got the Medion MD95900 where it advertised that it had POI's
OK it does but i am unable to add a data base for speed cameras on their,

    could you help???
  • You can use POI-Warner on your Medion. This will allow many more POI's like Speed Cams, McDs, Wifi and much more.

    Cost is around £18

    Then you can either:

get the speed cam database they advise for another few quid
    or
use the pocketgps database for free

I have a (now quite old) Palm Tungsten T PDA and wanted to use it to make a cheap GPS system. If anyone has a fairly new PDA (Pocket PC or PalmOS) that has bluetooth, I would recommend people check out getting a bluetooth GPS receiver and GPS software like TomTom Navigator or ViaMichelin. As my PDA was quite old, I was rather limited with my options. TomTom only works with the Tungsten T3 upwards, so I had to go with ViaMichelin. I was able to get a bluetooth gps, ViaMichelin (which I was able to upgrade to the latest version on their website for free) and a car mount bracket all for roughly £80. As I had the PDA already it saved me a packet. The whole setup works fine. A few routing problems (takes you down unfit roads) - but the GPS system can't tell how bad the roads are, and I'm guessing it would be the same for TomTom. You can also upload the Points Of Interest (i.e. speed cameras) from the pocketgps website. Using the ascii converter program on there to convert the camera files to work on ViaMichelin.

All-in-all a good way to get a cheap GPS setup if you have the PDA to start with :-)

    Hi Munki,

Can I ask where you bought the Bluetooth GPS, ViaMichelin and the car kit - it sounds extremely good value. Thanks.

    Hi,

Yes I got a bluetooth GPS receiver through https://www.expansys.com for approx £65.

As I was writing the previous post I realised that my figures were based on be getting Viamichelin mapsonic 2.5 through ebay, which turned out to be what I believe was a copy. However after a bit of searching I did find a few more auctions for what I think were legit versions for only a little bit more. Couple this with a slightly cheaper GPS you might be able to get through ebay too, hopefully this will even out any price different.

Avoid the 1.3 version of mapsonic, as viamichelin offer a free upgrade to version 3.0 (and then a further upgrade to 3.1) when you register with them on their website. It's easy and they seem to send the email with upgrade download links very quickly. But to get this upgrade you have to using version 2.5. Have version 1.3 and you're at a dead end.

Finally get a car mount bracket, also bought on ebay for about £8 (make sure you get one big enough to fit the Palm, and with enough room at the bottom to be able to plug a travel hotsync cable in). Also buy a palm travel kit comprising of a usb cigarette charger and travel hotsync cable (I had one of these already), and you can charge/power the palm while on the move.

You may need to get a cigarette socket splitter (only a few quid) as the GPS comes with an in-car-charger. Our Citroen Picasso has a second cigarette lighter socket near the parcel shelf, so I've plaged the GPS there without the need of a splitter. I've heard that some cars, including the picasso have a type of windscreen that can block the signals to the gps, so I think I had no choice but to mount it at the back of the car. Only problem is I have to go and turn it on and off as I use it. Oh well.

It's not going to be a super-duper professional job, but it should suit most peoples needs, and if you don't want the mess of any cables in your car, you can get away with running the GPS for about 8 - 10 hours on full charge, and I can get a couple of hours out of the Palm on full charge. I've managed to tuck my hotsync cable out the way so it's there if I need it (for power) and isn't too untidy.

In total, a reliable GPS setup, with the bonus that you can take it out and lend it to a friend/family or use it whilst walking - without the need to unscrew anything!

    Hope this helps,

    Munki.
