Hi Dwarf Gouramis unfortunately suffer froma disease, which can kill them very quickly.
try looking on this forum https://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk0 -
No need to clean out the filter every week, only when it is starting to show signs of clogging.
Do you have a hospital tank you can use?Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

he should only be doing a partial water change. If he is removing ALL the water each week, then he his taking out all the good bacteria.
He only needs to remove, say a third, of the water and then top up with water which has been treated with a dechlorinating fluid.
As for disease in the tank, you can get treatments to pour into the tank. It "may" help.
Plus you should never clean out the filter in tap water. If you are re-using the filter, it should be cleaned out in the water you are removing (again this preserves all the good bacteria). Alternatively you put in a new filter0 -
He changes about 20% of the water and cleans the filter in the water he has taken from the tank. the tank has been up and running since last October. He put some bacteria treatment in the tank yesterday. Thanks for all your replies.0

oh cool. He's doing the right thing. You wouldn't believe how many people just empty everything out and fill up with tap water
The treatment is the best you can do really. Just keep your fingers crossed and hope it doesn't spread.0 -
Thats cool that he just does a 20% change. Ive known people to empty it, clean the tank with washing up liquid and re-fill, then ask me why all their fish died.
Unfortunately, Dwarf Gouramis are nowhere near as hardy as they used to be, so it could be just that. What other fish have you got in the tank with it?0 -
Hi
He has neon tetras, catfish, shrimps and hong kong plex????? (have no idea if I have spelt that correctly or that it is even pronounced like that!) Ha ha!:rotfl:0 -
The fish should all be ok together then, its probably a Plec.0
